My thread on GD about "corrective rape" against LGBTIs

If you haven't read it, please do. It is really tough to read this report from the NYT but it is important that folks outside the community (and some within it) are made aware of the kind of violence LGBTIs face every day, around the globe.

Can't say I'm surprised but I am disappointed and rather frustrated that this report garnered virtually no interest or response, save for one poster who serves as a host for the the Women's Rights & Issues Group.

For whatever reason, topics relating to human rights abuses get little discussion here. closeupready May 2014 #1

I've many times posted threads about sex slavery and modern slave trafficking, to see the thread drop out of sight, without comment. Or, as you imply, commented upon only by really committed liberals.

I'm truly at a loss to explain it. You would think that if any place would welcome discussion of these topics it would be DU. But like you, I've noticed posting such threads is too often like dropping a bucket into a bottomless well. Same thing with threads about reproduction rights.

There is a common theme among these threads -- the issues of homophobia and misogyny. Substantive discussions on these topics are difficult to sustain. Since the thread on "corrective rape" deals with both issues, its fate was probably sealed. As I've stated many times before, the battle against misogyny and homophobia (and too often, racism) are front lines of the same war. We will be stronger for fighting this war together, not as factions.
