Cleveland hosts Gay Games in gay marriage battleground state

(Reuters) - Thousands of athletes and fans are converging on Cleveland on Saturday for the opening ceremonies of the 9th Gay Games, bringing the international event to a state that has become a key battleground for gay marriage rights.

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati this week heard arguments on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky. Gay marriage supporters have seen a series of legal victories around the country since the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional last year.

Cleveland was selected in 2009 over Boston, Washington and other large U.S. cities to host the games, held every four years since they debuted in 1982 in San Francisco.

Games co-chairman Steve Sokany said he believes the selection of the Midwestern city was about changing hearts and minds and it has received unprecedented corporate sponsorship....

If you prefer to get your Gay Games on in Summit County, here is a list of events and parties taking place in and around Akron.

"My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding," Aug. 7-17

Actors' Summit Theater is holding the musical every day of the Gay Games at Akron's Graystone Hall. The story starts with a traditional divorce and culminates in a gay wedding. The New York Times described the Broadway performance as "a low-key charmer in a sweet, folky vein, which features possibly the first history of gay marriage told in song."...

...Gay Rodeo, Sunday and Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The International Gay Rodeo Association operates year-round, even when the Gay Games are not in session, and has more than 5,000 members in North America. Starting Sunday, the rodeo will take to the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge...

...There are also special events including steer decoration, a wild drag race and goat dressing.
