A telling account of what life was like for LGBT people not that long ago

http://www.lettersofnote.com/2013/02/have-you-enjoyed-embracing-men.html

Younger people today want to know why older members of the community didn't come out. This is what the climate was like when I was in college.

I am unalterably opposed to your proposal and cannot see how any person in his right mind can condone the practices which you would justify. Please do not contaminate my mail with such filthy trash.

Response from a member of Congress to a letter about not firing gay people from the Library of Congress for "embracing men."

It's been a long, hard struggle, but we have made progress.

And without any recourse - and a country that had zero recognition of the LGBT community as actual HUMAN BEINGS (we still have a long way as a country on that point) -

How could anyone be critical of someone who just wanted to keep a roof over their head?

Sad thing is - I still think a lot of this goes on today. They won't come right out to someone's face and say it - but shit about performance gets made up.
