Pope Francis has attacked same-sex marriage, saying those who support it are attempting redefine the very institution of marriage.
Speaking at a mass in Manila, Pope Francis made the comments, despite having recently appeared to be softening his stance on the issue of gay or lesbian couples marrying.
He said: The family is threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage. These realities are increasingly under attack from powerful forces which threaten to disfigure Gods plan for creation.
The Pope recently said the Catholic Church must help parents to stand by their gay children but that same-sex marriage never crossed the minds of bishops when they gathered at the Vatican in October.

Perhaps to show that the many sides of love and humanity don't all have to be the same.

(231 posts)We should remember that the Pope's stand on gay marriage is pretty much the same as Barack Obama's was just a couple years ago...I like the guy...and I want to cut him some slack, but seriously, we "disfigure God's plan?"
In some ways Francis sounds like the "moderate" wing of the GOP -- don't actually change any policy positions, but try to speak a little less like a raving bigot. A few years ago Jeb Bush was talking about "sodomites" but now he says we should "respect individuals."
I guess the plan is speak softly but still carry the bigot stick.

(18,312 posts)Same hate as always. Hate towards gays, hate towards women, hate towards freedom of choice.
He's no hero. He's a bigot who presumes to speak for God, and who billions agree speak for God.
How anyone can take this bullshit artist seriously is really beyond me. How can he profess to be a follower of the price of peace when all he does is spout such hate (and give fodder for others to continue to hate) against the LGBT community?
Fuck the pope

(54,007 posts)He throws some crumbs and we are supposed to act like we have been provided a feast. In a recent tempest-in-a-teapot scandal, fueled by a few types of bigotry, one gay poster was mocked, ridiculed, and berated for pointing out the Pope was invited to speak before the Congress, like Netanyahu. What that poster didn't understand is the level of hate involved (now we hear it is really the Jew's doing, not poor, simple Boehner), and when pointed out the hatefulness of the Pope and how those screeching and gnashing their teeth about Netanyahu were singing the praises of the Pope being an invited guest, he was given all kinds of excuses and thrashed. It is all so predictable. When it comes to gay rights/feelings/concerns, while things have become better, there are WAY TOO MANY fair-weathered friends who will gladly throw us under the bus, actually they don't even let us near the fucking bus! Thankfully, there are some really good and reliable allies here.
Even this story was parsed so many ways as to be laughable in its pathetic nature. Basically, we were told we should be grateful for this Pope; it was all over the blog-o-sphere. It just showed me how little regard people hold for GLBT concerns.
