L stands for lesbians women whose primary emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attractions are to other women.
G stands for gay men men whose primary emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attractions are to other men.
B stands for bisexuals men or women whose primary emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attractions are to both women and men.
T stands for transgendered a broad term that includes cross-dressers, transsexuals, and people who live substantial portions of their lives as other than their birth gender. A transgendered person is someone whose gender identity and/or expression differ from conventional expectations for their physical birth sex. Gender identity refers to the internal sense of being male or female, while gender expression refers to how someone presents his or her gender to the world through style of dress, mannerisms, and so on. A transitioning transgender person is one who is modifying her or his physical characteristics and manner of expression to in effect satisfy the standards for membership in another gender. Transgender people can be straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Q stands for questioning someone who is questioning their sexual and/or gender orientation. Sometimes, the Q stands for queer, a term reclaimed by some LGBTs for political reasons.
What people in these groups all have in common is that they challenge the heterosexist norms of mainstream society and are stigmatized as a result; otherwise, the LGBTQ community is very diverse with respect to ethnic and cultural backgrounds, physical ability, religion, personality traits, socioeconomic class, and many other attributes

(4,168 posts)The only change I'd advocate is dropping the alphabet soup entirely and just calling ourselves Queer. This need to tack on yet another letter as political thought evolves is well meaning, but in practical terms it just looks damn silly.

(14,498 posts)Yes, I know it's long since been "reclaimed".....and it IS inclusive... but the historic implication of the word is that it is "strange" and therefore people so defined are both unusual and unnatural.
The whole point of the modern movement is that variations from the "norm" in this sphere are neither unusual OR unnatural. That there is a natural *spectrum*. ( A pretty good place to start, btw; but Autism/Aspergers movement/groups beat us to it.)
So.... a word LIKE "Queer", but not Queer.

(4,112 posts)You get credit for "spectrum" in that case! GMTA

(14,498 posts)There are too many variations, shades, and permutations. The language is increasingly clumsy and unclear. ( It's fundamentally about clarity in communication, is it not?)
"Sexual Minorities" comes close; it's pretty inclusive but of course doesn't deal w. the gender/gender expression dimension.
How about "Sexual and Gender Minorities"?
Well, we're getting closer.

(4,112 posts)How about something like "Spectrum" or "Sexual Spectrum" to encompass all possibilities of relationship and gender identity?

(14,498 posts)Ultimately... Autism's "on the spectrum" may just have to move over and make room.

(26,355 posts)I'm all for being more inclusive. Intersex and asexual people also need a place.

(18,421 posts)1.) All are welcome in this group. All are welcome to discuss issues regarding sexual orientation in a safe haven where non-heterosexual people are protected in their right to express their orientation opinions. No one should ever feel excluded from the discussion.
2.) We are all different people. Each and every one of us is different. We are grouped by similarities, yet we are not the same, any one of us.
We could ask to change the name, but it isn't the name that is important, it is the community and the individuals, not groups, that make up the community.
My two cents.

I'll go with the majority regardless, the name of the group doesn't affect me. In DU2 it was GLBT for instance and we voted to change it to LGBT for DU3.
