I am absolutely appalled at some of the comments in GD over Bruce Jenner. He (his preference for now) was 100% sincere and serious. He is suffering and has been his (Jenner's preference for now) entire life. I don't give a shit that he is a Republican, HE IS A HUMAN BEING.
I am in total solidarity with the transgender community, both at DU and in the real world. People need to be educated, seriously. They need to take Bruce Jenner seriously.
Thanks for listening.

(12,723 posts)must be treated like human beings. Since he is a republican, name-calling and hateful comments are just fine.

(37,457 posts)It's shit like you sarcastically said that drives people away, NOT to progressivism and the Democratic Party. Honey, vinegar. Who knows, maybe he might actually become a liberal after everything he goes through ? It would not surprise me in the least. I think he has an eye-opening experience coming for him. Some idiot at WND or one of those websites had the gall to say that she did not APPROVE of what he was doing. WTF. Not your call to approve or disapprove, science trumps your fucking opinion. Human compassion trumps your opinion.
There are a lot of people who are liberal on social issues and conservative on economic issues, states rights, and/or foreign policy. If we are ever going to get them voting for Democrats we have to stop treating them all as ignorant, racist, fundamentalist xtians.
I don't care if Jenner has tons of money, appears on reality shows, and identifies himself as republican. He is a human being going through a personal transformation that is extremely difficult and will be painful at times. He deserves and should have the full support, compassion, and understanding from this site. I am appalled at some of the comments made here.
Thank you Steve for this thread.

All the crap that I have seen being said about him makes me physically ill.
He came out as being a woman and he should be receiving the support of DU and liberals far and wide and instead I have seen some of the most disgustingly bigoted remarks I have ever seen.
At least the LGBT group is a safe harbor from that venom!
I know I don't post here often but this is truly and awesome group![/font]

(12,233 posts)Of course, I'd rather he be a progressive Democrat, money or no money. Oh well. I think he might change parties eventually, and come over from the dark side.

(48 posts)Generally, wealth people are Republicans anyway because they only care when it affects them personally. Jenner being a man or a woman is personal, it doesn't put food on the table for millions of Americans nor should it be a national new. How Jenner treats his/her fellow human beings with his fame and wealth should be the question. Jenner hails from a party that neither cares about the poor or the unfortunate people among us and deriding their fellow human beings is their forte. So I do not feel one way or the other about the backlash. He/she is an adult and am sure he/she expected it and more so, he/she will handle it well. Good luck to him/her and I hope he/she uses this new found platform for the greater good. Not surprised that he/she is a Republican!

(26,623 posts)but, if going public helps someone struggling with personal gender identity issues, I'm grateful for this interview. Let's put an end to the suffering in silence that so often leads to terrible consequences.

(63,215 posts)How can anyone be "skeptical" of Jenner's story, as is being discussed in another thread? Do they think he's undergoing this profound and fundamental transformation as a publicity stunt? Who the fuck are they to second-guess him?
I can't imagine that the transition is ever easy, and the constant media frenzy--however self-generated--can't be making it any easier.
Every day on my morning commute, at least several morning DJs make jokes at Jenner's expense. If any wider good is to come from this, perhaps it's the revelation that our culture still has a very long way to go before it recognizes transgendered people as human beings.

(82,383 posts)He has all the money he needs to deal with his situation. But no compassion for those who don't.
I don't want a set list of Republicans we can't criticize for their Republican views.
True there are black Republicans, gay Republicans, minority group Republicans. The right wing uses that. It's the right wing that believes that our sympathies for minorities mean we can't criticize Republican ideas when it comes from people in those groups.
It's also fair comment that Jenner may be apolitical and is about to find out how they feel about him and his rights. If he knew, then he'd likely know to explain himself why he thinks their economic ideas will take care of his rights in the long run.
