Office of Motor Vehicles isn't allowing name changes on driver's licenses for same-sex couples
By Julia O'Donoghue, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

When Troy Hylan tried to get his name changed on his driver's license to match his spouse's earlier this week, a state motor vehicle office employee in Bossier City told him that wasn't possible because he was married to a man.
It didn't matter that Hylan had his valid marriage license from New York and new social security card with him when he went to the motor vehicle office.
"They told him they couldn't do it. The woman told him, at one point, he had to have a court order," said David Hylan, Troy's husband, "The DMV, of course, is not well-known for its customer service."
Louisiana's Office of Motor Vehicles has said it isn't authorizing any name changes on driver's licenses and vehicle registration forms for same-sex marriage couples until later this month. The American Civil Liberties Union and same-sex marriage advocates have already said this delay will open the agency up to lawsuits.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The head of Louisiana State Police says members of same-sex couples who want their married name on their driver's licenses can make that change starting Monday.
Col. Mike Edmonson says computers had to be reprogrammed to change a man's last name and to check the change with Social Security records.
He says people changing their names need to bring in their certified marriage license and proof that they've changed the name in Social Security records. Those will provide information state police need for the computer check.

(7,231 posts)5. Question: isn't name change traditionally reserved to women?
I'm all for gender equality, but do the laws as they are even allow such name changes for men?
