COVINGTON — A sometimes-tearful Kim Davis took the stand Monday to say her decision as Rowan County Clerk to refuse marriage licenses to same-sex couples was a heartfelt decision based on her religious convictions.

"It was something I had prayed and fasted over. ... It wasn't a spur of the moment decision," Davis told U.S. District Judge David Bunning, her voice breaking.

To authorize licenses means "I'm saying I agree with it and I can't."

Her choice to also deny licenses to straight couples was because "I didn't want to discriminate against anyone."

Two of those straight couples and two gay couples from Rowan County sued Davis shortly after her office stopped issuing marriage licenses to anyone in the wake of the June 26 decision by the Supreme Court, which overturned Kentucky's ban on same-sex marriage and declared the practice legal across the country.

get to this point? Marriage in the United States is a civil matter. When marriages are performed they are done so by agents (religious and non-religious) approved and recognized by the state to do so. What was her criteria for denying licenses to straight couples? Were one or both of the participants divorced or had premarital sex not christian where does this end? This is completely frivolous.

I don't care if she prayed and fasted. I don't care if she read tea leaves or chicken entrails. I don't care if she fucking flipped a coin. She refuses to do her job. She should be fired. No praying, fasting, tea leaf reading required. Don't do job. Get fired. It's really that simple.

As in sending in state troopers or national guard to take over her office, arrest her and issue marriage licenses themselves, until such time as a replacement clerk can be found.

This is no longer about her job - and it never really was about Jesus. It's about self-proclaimed martyrdom and self-promoting GoFundMe opportunities. Maybe even a chance to be on TV!

It's also about stubbornly holding on to prejudice.

if it is she is flat out lying about giving licenses to heterosexuals. She said flat out on the tape she wouldn't give a license to the gay couple not that she wasn't giving out licenses at all.
