Marriage SURVIVES In New Hampshire!
Two HUGE defeats for NOM on the same day!
Freedom To Marry exults via press release:
Today, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted down legislation that would have repealed the states two-year-old freedom to marry law along with a key vote to defeat the Bates Amendment, which would have forced a non-binding referendum on marriage onto the November ballot and replaced marriage with civil unions. The final bill was defeated by a vote of 211 to 116 and the Bates Amendment by a vote of 162 to 188. Stripping away the freedom to marry in New Hampshire was a top priority of national anti-gay organizations, which had predicted that they would be able to garner the vote of two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate to override the promised veto by Governor John Lynch.

(36,281 posts)...until broader social changes make them so marginalized that they give up. Something I've learned in recent years-- liberal victories are rarely permanent. We have to keep fighting those battles over and over again, because the other side just keeps reviving the horse until it's so threadbare they finally capitulate. I don't think that will happen in my lifetime, unfortunately.

(6,907 posts)we have to keep fighting, you are right. But we make ground.
It was probably 40 years ago when the Lizard King said that they had the guns but we had the numbers. We still haven't won, and it is painfully slow, but we make progress.

(8,462 posts)It will probably achieve a few more victories as their prior victories slowly are stripped from them, but it will be a net decrease. NC and MN will hopefully follow NH's example here.

For the NOMies reading this post.... you not only had a shit sandwich for lunch... but they served you another one for dinner as well.....
You loose ground everyday.... sometimes an inch, sometimes a mile..... but you are still a "looser" everyday.....

(11,550 posts)Yesterday was a good day not only for gay and lesbian families in New Hampshire, but for the marriage equality movement on the whole.
And not only could the anti-gay forces not gather the veto proof majorities as they were publicly claiming to expect, they couldn't even gather a simple majority. Absolutely delicious!
