hoenix, Ariz., opened the doors to the state's first high schools targeted toward LGBT students last month. Q High joins just a handful of other LGBT-geared high schools across the country.
"Everyone here is open and welcoming," Tyler, a junior, told a local ABC affiliate. "Everyone says hi, everyone wants to know you."
The school operates mainly as a Arizona Virtual Academy, so students take academic classes online. The school also operates as a youth center that provides resources for LGBT youth, including a class on coming out. Currently 14 students are enrolled, but the facility can handle 25 students.

(27,670 posts)I'm proud of our Pride(s). We maintain an open presence in many rural areas, meeting in establishments/public places that are not primarily exclusively lgbt oriented.
Phoenix Pride events start soon!

They sponsor a couple of softball teams in our Gay league - it is apparant that many have never played a team sport before - but they try, and they get better, and most of all, they have fun - especially in an arena where many never would have dared to set foot in before.

(18,421 posts)I think they are the same arguments made for and against all women's and all men's schools. On one hand it gets people together in a safe environment to help them learn better. On the other hand, if not careful, the experience can leave them lacking in the skills needed to interact in the "real world", essentially that isolationism is a bad thing for any community. Safe haven yes, but isolationism no. Sort of an anti-Milk concept. I suppose it can be a bit of a fine line.
I hope the school helps those who go there, but also I hope that LGBT youth maintain voices in our other public schools to prove stereotypes wrong. I also realize that it is a small school.
In the end, I hope that we can continue to tackle the huge issue of LGBT bullying in our school system and I hope we will soon reach a day where this sort of thing isn't necessary for some but an option for all to help them grow as LGBT people.
