Words from Women on Earth Day

Earth Day, also known as International Mother Earth Day, originated in 1970 to celebrate our planet and to promote sustainable, healthy environments in communities around the world. Today, people traditionally take part in activities to honor our Mother Earth and pledge to take action in protecting our environment.
Women environmentalists have often been a driving force in green movements globally, dedicating their lives to defending the planet. Their work has been responsible for environmental triumphs that range from the banning of pesticides to the protection of primates.

Here are some quotes on Mother Earth from some of the more famous women environmentalists:

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature– the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”-environmental activist and marine biologist Rachel Carson

“My mission is to create a world where we can live in harmony with nature.”- primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall

“We are either going to have a future where women lead the way to make peace with the Earth or we are not going to have a human future at all.”
―eco-feminist Vandana Shiva

“In Kenya women are the first victims of environmental degradation, because they are the ones who walk for hours looking for water, who fetch firewood, who provide food for their families.”-environmental activist Wangari Maathai

“Health to the ocean means health for us.” -oceanographer Sylvia Earle
