Colleges across the region are struggling to meet federal regulations for how to respond to claims of sexual assault on campus. They face pressure from outside critics and the White House to protect victims, but also the rights of the accused.

The critical minutes, hours and days after a college student reports a sexual assault – something one in five women on campus will experience – have put universities under a microscope.

From the White House to the courthouse, criticism is raining down on colleges for how they handle cases that often combine drinking, late-night violence, legal liability and sex.

It's among the most vexing problems facing colleges accustomed to disciplinary hearings and resulting suspensions or expulsions out of the public eye.
