BOSTON - The Massachusetts Legislature sent a bill to the desk of Gov. Deval Patrick on Tuesday aimed at protecting patients' access to health clinics where abortions are performed.
The bill was rushed through the legislative process after the U.S. Supreme Court in June struck down the state's law establishing a buffer zone around such clinics.
The bill, S. 2283, passed the House 119 to 33 and the Senate on a voice vote. The House passed an "emergency preamble," which means the bill will take effect as soon as Patrick, a Democrat, signs it into law.
Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Democratic candidate for governor and a supporter of the bill, said, "Women should be able to access reproductive health care free from intimidation and threats, and this bill is a major step toward protecting those rights and protecting public safety around these facilities."....
