Man Who Brought Explosive Device, Knives to Kan. Abortion Clinic Arrested
August 24, 2015 Kansas law enforcement officials said Tuesday that a man who brought an explosive device to a Wichita abortion clinic has been arrested, CNN/WVTM reports.
Details on Kan. Incident
According to officials, Moises Trevizo last week entered the South Wind Women's Center during business hours, allegedly seeking employment. While at the clinic, Trevizo told staff he had an explosive device and knives in his backpack. The explosive device consisted of several fireworks that Trevizo had fastened together, according to police.
Police Capt. Doug Nolte said Trevizo was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of explosives. However, Nolte said law enforcement did not believe Trevizo had planned to use the explosive device to harm the clinic. According to CNN/WVTM, police officials said Trevizo had recently moved out of a home and was carrying all of his personal possessions in his backpack.
Julie Burkhart -- founder of the Trust Women Foundation, which opened SWWC -- said the clinic "enacted security protocols" in light of acts of violence against abortion clinics "across the country." She added, "I'm very concerned that someone would come in the building with weapons. He was carrying knives and explosives. This really illustrates to me that the security protocols that we have in place work."
SWWC is in the same location that once housed a clinic run by George Tiller, an abortion provider who was murdered in 2009.
