I think what they put in are IOLs. They work great! I have no astigmatism anymore and see much better. I no longer need glasses to read or do close work. I use them fror driving but my prescription is far less extreme now.

Seriously, the surgery was painless. Some of the tests before the surgery were kind of uncomfortable though. And the surgery was followed by 3 kinds of eyedrops 3x/day for about 4 weeks. That wasn't fun exactly but I got used to it.

They don't do both at the same time though. It is outpatient. You'll be at the surgery center about 3 hours or so. Why are you considering this - do you have cataracts?

They are beyond wonderful. In first grade I could not see the blackboard. Now I have vision that is very close to 20/20 all the time.

There are alternatives about what kind of lenses will be implanted, so you need to discuss this very carefully beforehand.

Very happy for you. Yes, I've read about monofocal vs multifocal and various brands. It's interesting. Aside of being able to see better is there anything that is different about vision after IOL's? Does sunlight seem brighter or do you see head light glare at night?

the headlight glare problem. As well as the glare/flaring (not sure which it really was) from the light right after sunset. Since I live in New Mexico, with the wonderful light we have here, that was weird and VERY noticeable. Apparently it is one of the clear-cut symptoms of cataracts.

Sunlight does not seem brighter, but that's probably because our eyes accommodate the sunlight as they should. I see colors much better now. I embroider and crochet, and I was noticing that I could not tell certain colors apart under artificial light. Now I can see gradations of color that I'd slowly lost without realizing.

My vision is now crystal clear in a way it never was. I feel as if I can read street signs on distant mountains, even though I can't actually do that. There is just no blurring or fuzziness. I do still need reading glasses.

One choice I was offered was to have lenses that gave me the close vision so I wouldn't need reading glasses, and the middle vision, but I'd need prescription lenses for driving. I prefer it the way I have it, since I can buy the cheap reading glasses for a lot less than prescription glasses.

The other thing that is very noticeable is that my night vision is now what it was like when I was probably in my twenties. I still have an initial slow adaption to being outside in the dark, or entering a darkened movie theater, but after a few minutes I see very well in the dark.
