More than 390 people have reported getting sick in a norovirus outbreak associated with a suburban Kansas City dinner theater.
The Kansas department of health and environment initially said more than 100 people got sick after going to the New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park. On Thursday, KDHE said more than 390 individuals had now reported illness, and four people had laboratory specimens that confirmed norovirus, KDHE said.
KDHE was investigating the source of the illness, which is highly contagious and spreads through food, water or person-to-person contact. It is commonly associated with large gatherings of people; symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and body aches.
The health department said the theater had been fully cooperating with the investigation.
Rob McGraw, vice-president of sales and marketing for New Theatre Restaurant, told the Kansas City Star that three employees had been confirmed for norovirus and that those employees served a man who attended the 17 January matinee performance. That man also had been confirmed to have norovirus.
