By Lenny Bernstein
Statins like Lipitor and its generics have revolutionized cardiovascular care for nearly two decades as an effective, inexpensive way to reduce LDL cholesterol, the so-called bad cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Not everyone can take them, though; a significant number of people complain of muscle pain, weakness and cramping so severe that they discontinue the therapy even at the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Their resistance to the medication has been controversial, because in most cases there are no biomarkers for the muscle problems individuals describe. Some researchers have speculated that the problem is psychological, the "nocebo" effect of blaming the medication for the pain.
But a study released Sunday shows for the first time that statin intolerance is very real and that a newer, different kind of drug can have a strong impact on these patients' high cholesterol.

(23,156 posts)I was put on a statin for high cholesterol, and after a while had ongoing diarrhea, another side effect, and stopped taking it.
Plus, high cholesterol is not necessarily such a terrible thing.
We now know that it is not cholesterol that causes cardiovascular disease, but inflammation. Important, too, is knowing whether your cholesterol is large fluffy particles that will stick to inflamed arterial walls, or smaller particles that pass through easily. That test should be routine, and is covered by Medicare.
An anti-inflammatory diet is key. Green tea, pomegranate, blueberries, fish, etc.
And anyone who is taking a statin for cholesterol should also be taking the supplement CoQ10, cardiologists agree.

(4,221 posts)Also a bit of the same in my toes. And the muscles in my forearms would ache. I tried two different types, same thing. , Would go off them. Perfectly normal, functioning fingers. Would try again a week later, and same stiffness, pain in my fingers would reoccur a couple of hours later. Tried this (week off, then try again) a few times.
It was not coincidence. There is something in those pills that my body reacts to...
I actually told the doctor in no uncertain terms that I had always had rather high cholesterol (even when I was under 100 pounds and running on a track team 40 miles a week) but I had never had joint problems, so I'd rather risk the heart attack than damage to my joints. Pretty sure he got the message.
Probably not much of a chance I will try this new drug - $10K to $15K per year? Something tells me it won't wind up on the $15 scrip list.

(3,912 posts)or something like that.
experienced this myself last week. I went to the ER with chills, nausea, and pain and had lost almost 15 pounds in two weeks. I was drinking lots of water, but surprisingly they said I was also dehydrated. This time was Atorvastatin. Years ago I was on Simvastatin with no issues at all.
ER doc said to stop the statin and he'd forward the info to my PCP.

(12,051 posts)severe that I couldn't walk. The cramp was so bad that my calf muscle hurt for 3 days, as if I had run a race with it. I went back to simvastatin, which causes the occasional mild calf cramp, but nothing like atorvastatin.

(5,281 posts)After taking a statin for about 3 months with no problems I started to have horrible leg pain while walking--to the point that I was becoming severely incapacitated. It took several weeks to figure out it was the statin. Since then I have tried every form of statin including red rice--at doctors' insistence--and had problems with each one.
I've become very wary of doctors orders since then and every time I have to go to a new doctor I have to become very adamant about my reaction because they just refuse to believe that the reaction is more than "some soreness and mild discomfort".
