ACA subsidies/payments for the new year.

Just finished ACA sign up for a family member and the exact same planis a solid 20% higher next year. The overall subsidy is up (albeit because his income is less) but somehow it's still going to be a flat 20% increase. He's not complaining about it, as working health insurance is better than no health insurance.

I can't help to wonder if the insurance companies worked the increase in advance due to the absolute ****ery going on in Washington. To be honest I'm surprised it wasn't jacked up even more than that. 8 years to consider and fix a system they cried was broken and that sick ass cohort of republicans have no fixes. The only thing they have for a system, that would function properly otherwise, is chaos and instability. Chaos that normal Americans are going to pay for.

They haven't even got their economic hit job on the middle class passed yet but Americans are already getting ready for the pinch. It's amazing how a typical middle class family is supposed to get about $1200 in savings from this tax plan and before that garbage even begins it's probably gone for most people right into their health care. At the end of the day these middle class breaks will only allow us to just begin to pay for all of the ways we will pay more for everything in the coming years thanks to republican rule.

Once again I've rambled on, but at least this time I pre-edited.... A little bit anyway.

that some of the damage the Republicans are doing is going to require getting ready for the pinch. What the fighting back is doing is keeping the pinch from being a punch.

In Japan each doctor has a book listing maximum prices for various services. Stitching up cut 3 to 5 inches, so many yen. 5 to 9 inches a dirrerent price. An agency sets the prices so that every price produces profit, but not excessive profit. For scans of various kinds the prices seem to be about 90% less than here.

Health care is not well suited for market pricing. You can’t decide bypass surgery is too expensive so you will buy an Audi instead.

Price fixing seems to work. The Japanese get more high tech treatments than we do. They go to the doctor more often than we do. They don’t have long waits. I think you often can see the doctor the same day.

Costs in japan are maybe a third lower than here.

Why not do what they and many other countries do?

It distorts markets but health care is not well suited for markets.

Kenneth Arrow won the Nobel Prize for economics. He carefully explains why markets are not well suited for health care in his brilliant paper “Uncertainty and the Welfare Economics of Medical Care”
