Related: About this forumAre you ready for the flu?
All the news this past week is about how severe this seasons flu is, and how limited this years flu shot is in preventing it.
Ive heard this years flu vaccine is about 10% effective against this years most dangerous flu strain.
They do advise getting the vaccine if you have not yet, as it will (hopefully) help make any flu you might get less severe.
Ive mentioned several times in the past that a friend of mine died several years ago from the flu.
Reading online, I see the deaths so far this year are about four times the average.
Rather than wait for possibly getting sick and needing to go out for some o-t-c medications, I decided to put together a flu kit of over-the-counter flu medications one could take if one gets the flu, to ease the symptoms and hopefully make it pass quicker.
I spent a couple hours googling, comparing, reading reviews, and tomorrow Im shopping for my list of goodies.
A word about Tamiflu. It costs about $100 for about four days (that's my copay, as well as if I just get it online); you must take it beginning in the first two days of getting flu symptoms; and it has some bad side effects (vomiting, possible disorientation, headaches, etc) Im not buying any.
Hopefully, by being prepared, I won't even get sick. But if I do, I hope to be prepared.

(11,108 posts)I only drink bourbon if someone else bought it (shouldn't be rude after all). If I'm to spend my money, I buy whisky - not corn liquor.

(115,678 posts)Some have antihistamines, decongestants, cough suppresants, etc. Make sure you don't double dose by accident. I generally get single products and make my own combinations as needed.
That's a good list. I also have otc dextromethorphan for cough suppressant at night, in pill form for stability because cough syrup form usually has shorter expiration date, it's mode cost effective and doesn't taste like syrup.
I like to make hot lemonade with ginger and honey too.

(51,626 posts)I didn't get the flu but I got two 10 day colds a month, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. AFTER I was hospitalized for pneumonia when I lost over 30% of my blood internally (one or the many possible strains of pneumonia) I was given a pneumonia vaccine but it is only for bacterial, not viral, pneumonia. I recommend everyone get a pneumonia vaccine too! Wash your hand constantly and drink a ton of water.

Not flu related, I know.

I try to teach moms and kids at the pediatric office to rub their eyes with their knuckles rather than their fingertips. We don't touch nearly as many surfaces with the backs of our fingers as we do with the palmar surfaces.
