Related: About this forumSaw my family doc today and got good neews!
BP meds working. I had a 116/80 reading. My weight, even tho I am not eating all that well, is still holding at 144, down from 150. Doc wants me to take Boost or Ensure which is fine with me.
I have a wonderful new doc after my Primary Care doc of over 20 years retired. I still miss him but he would truly be delighted to hear about my bp reading (he helped me struggle for years with high bp). The Verapamil in the am and Atenolol in the pm works just fine!
The nausea at the thought of food is still with me occasionally. But I take Dramamine and drink ginger ale. I haven't figured out where my nausea comes from.
This was a good day.

(4,218 posts)Glad you like your new doctor. Changing from a trusted GP to a new physician is always stressful.

(31,999 posts)I guess you're doing everything right!
I've found ginger tea works well for nausea, too, as long as it's the kind made with real ginger and not just artificial flavor. But you did say ginger ale helps.

(63,912 posts)I find it refreshing.
Because I have had some dizziness on getting up in the morning (from jumping up out of bed instead of sitting for a minute before I stand up) he has set up a CT brain scan (altho he doesn't think anything is wrong but you can't be too careful). I'm having it tomorrow. Hubby will take me over to the facility. Had blood drawn this pm and will get the results shortly.

(67,782 posts)....and we experimented a little (I was only on the fringe of high - 140/95) At first the low dose didn't seem to be working, so he doubled it. A couple of weeks later I fainted (ripped open my chin, five stitches, and now I have a nice looking beard!!) - it was too low. Cut back again, and now it's around 130/85, we're happy with that.

(54,379 posts)I'm 66 and still have a BP of about 115/75 when relaxed, and don't take BP meds (do take blood thinners and statins). If I gave up cheese, I'd probably go so low as to fade away altogether!

(3,056 posts)is actually pretty good. 120 is considered the norm. If the lower number was 116, then it'd be time to worry.

(52,227 posts)I have had very frequent nausea, usually I wake up with it and it more or less fades as the day goes on. I believe this is related to my frequent migraines.
I've had various prescriptions to help, and currently have Reglan. It works fine with no side effects for me. Maybe slightly dry mouth. But I can't take it every day.
Over the years I've largely gotten used to it and simply ignore it, as I get now tell the difference between mere nausea and that actual, get me a bucket sensation.
In any event, careful with the bp meds, especially with other meds, they can interact strongly. I once mistakenly took verapamil and nadolol at the same time and I spent the next several hours alternating throwing up and passing out.
I'm guessing your atenolol would have a similar risk of cratering your bp if you took it close the verapamil, but I'm guessing the hours between make it not a problem.
Check with your doc just to be aware. That was a very unpleasant and scary afternoon for me and I wouldn't wish it on anyone....

(63,912 posts)My 116/80 reading was gratifying to him and to me.
Since I have no other symptoms, his prescribing the CT scan is just precautionary. I don't expect anything awful to surface. No other symptoms.

(4,999 posts)I love indian food -- loaded with ginger, turmeric onions, all good things for nausea. Sometimes, either my wife or I will say "I feel a little off and need a digestive reset", and we go have indian. I works for us.
I realize this is not your situation at all with regard to dizziness, but it doesn't hurt to share it either:
We go hiking/backpacking in the mountains, and often I nearly sit down in order to get a photo of a wildflower, or an unusual camera angle. I can be down for over a minute, and often when I stand back up I get dizzy. I thought it was probably the change of blood pressure in the brain due to the instant change in the elevation of my head relative to my body. But you know what I figured out? -- it's really blood sugar. I noticed I never get dizzy after a camera shot if I've had a snack in the past 15 minutes...
Good luck!

(6,228 posts)You say you drink ginger ale. Do you drink Vernors? Here in Michigan, Vernors is both pop and medicine.

(3,056 posts)It was still black market when my husband was sick, so it was no where near the quality we can get now. I'm in Nevada, and it's fairly easy to get your medical card, which makes the sales tax lower, and quality higher.

(21,132 posts)I managed to bring down my BP through diet and exercise, but then managed to "acquire" a heart condition that requires me to take blood pressure medicine to relax the heart muscle. Ironically, now I have the opposite problem and usually have both numbers in the double digits when my BP is taken.
