Daily use of marijuana raises risk of heart disease, study finds

Using marijuana every day can raise a person's risk of coronary artery disease, or CAD, by a third compared with those who never partake, a new study found.

"A growing body of evidence suggests that cannabis is not entirely without harm and may actually cause cardiovascular disease," said lead study author Dr. Ishan Paranjpe, a resident physician at Stanford University. The study — which has not yet been published -— will be presented Sunday at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.

I abused my body in my youth (mostly 70's). Drank too much, did various drugs, and smoked a lot of weed. It really was all about SDNR. I got married in late 70's and became more serious about my job and health. Ran 5 miles every day for about decade and no drugs.

Fast forward...I retired early at age 52 and started walking about 6-8 miles every morning for about 15 years (in hindsight a bit too much) and started smoking weed again. I smoke weed everyday, normally at night before going to bed or if I become stressed or depressed about something domestic or otherwise. It helps me get a good night's sleep and good dreams. I only smoke at home, never let anyone know that I do smoke (I live in Texas). So much so that I don't really feel that high anymore just relaxed. Could be the homegrown? Don't really know.

Now at age 72, I'm guessing have smoked for about 30 years, maybe 25 regularly. I think my cardio is good? Good BP, etc. and no indication of issues so far. The only medication I am on is Glaucoma drops. That is not to say that I don't have an issue but none indicated that I know of (knock wood).

I don't discount scientific studies or empirical evidence. But my life experience so far does not support this. I say "so far" because "You never know what's coming to get ya!!" ☮

PS - I worry more about the nasty air and water we have here in Texas because of the love affair with fossil fuels.

Started smoking at 17, when I could find it. I smoked probably 50% of the time. When I hit 40 I developed major sleeping issues. Took a lot of over the counter stuff, but nothing worked except Kava kava, but it worked great. Then it got taken off the shelfs because it's totally incompatible with alcohol, really bad stuff was mentioned. I went 72 hours and got 3 hours of sleep, walked into a wall and knocked myself out. I had quit smoking for a few months that time and knew I slept so much better when I smoked, so found a source and started smoking again, every day this time and have never stopped.

So 20 years after I started my daily smoking, I had my lungs x-rayed and doc said I look fine. I would like to switch to edibles, but the ones they have here are way too weak and do me no good. Still hoping the state will change it's rules or I will have to research and find ways to make my own edibles when/if my lungs start being impacted worse.

Even out in the boonies, they’ll be happy to explain a range of them. Just don’t mention weed. Herbs and flowers are fine.

Never do I mention their purpose. I'll check this out, there's a vape shop within a mile of me, so easy peasy. Thanks.

It knocks me out like nothing I have ever smoked. We only use it for that. It's indica dominant obviously.

still smoke an occasional joint just to change my luck 😃 I can tell the difference. Not so much the buzz but a little different. It is much harsher for sure. It really does help with the sleep, doesn't it. Not sure why I don't sleep as well anymore - maybe just age?

I never tried an edible or any of the really strong weed that I hear people talk about. I suspect Texas will be the last State in the union to legalize weed. Although my nephew tells me that you can feel Delta-9, which is legal so far in Texas, but I never tried it. I live in a very conservative rural area near Austin and although I suspect most people know I smoke I never mention it nor do they.

It did not include the use of edibles, which I think a lot of older people prefer. Now the heart rate issue probably would still apply but we have to see reseach on that for sure.

And, as others have said, the benefits outweigh the risks for many; not to mention that cannabis use is definitely not as harmful as alcohol.

This gent is a
resident physician

The study —
has not yet been published

I'd wait until it's picked apart by smart guys that are more than just a resident (doctor in training) and more information is published. This is just one "study"
Double blind placebo controlled studies are the gold standard in medicine...

You aren’t going to see a double blind placebo study of the effects of regular marijuana use. Im pretty sure the placebo group is going to know they aren’t getting marijuana every day.

The mechanism has been wel understood for a while.
