Cooking classes 'a boost to healthy diet'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21478156

Classes included information on budgeting, nutrition and cooking simple meals

Short cooking classes can have a long-term impact on healthy eating, a study suggests.

Questioning of parents who took part in government-funded courses in Scotland showed they ate more fruit and vegetables and fewer ready meals a year later.

Participants were also more confident about following a simple recipe.

The University of Glasgow researchers said refresher courses would boost the effects further.

I grew up with a mother who hated to cook and she showed me very little. I relied on Julia Child, who was a very good teacher. Formal classes might have saved me a lot of lacerated fingers, but television classes gave me enough of the basics to cook and avoid prefab food.

are being lost. It's not that hard to cook most things and doesn't take very long.

I'm a huge fan of Rachael Ray and her 30 minute meals. The first time I decided to make one, after having watched the show for a while, I was utterly astonished when the meal was actually ready in less than 30 minutes. A lot of what she does is simply technique, how to do various things quickly, and it works.

Jamie whatsisname, the English foodie who has come to this country to try to fix the school food in some different school districts, has also demonstrated that it is much faster to cook from scratch than to run out and pick up fast food.
