A friend and co-worker of mine died today.

I don't know much about details, but I do know that it was diabetes related, and that a month and a half ago she was at work and seemed fine. Then, suddenly she was hospitalized and in very dire straights. Then she had seemed to improve, and had gone home, and then in three days she is deceased.

I don't know exactly how old she was, but pretty sure that she was in her 30s--possibly even early 30s. I know that she leaves several children, the youngest less than 3 years old.

I know that she had had diabetes since she was a teenager, but you never would have known it if she hadn't told you. She always seemed bright and healthy and happy.

I suppose that this might be partly the fault of the free but inferior medical care available from the Indian Health Service. Certainly commodity based reservation diets are generally a contributing factor, but she seemed to always try to make an effort to eat healthy.

I know that I am sad for her and for her family.

My girlfriends uncle recently passed away from pancreatic cancer and he looked like he was doing good, then he got a gull bladder infection and ended up in the hospital. That looked like it was clearing up but he took a turn for the worst, they moved him to the ICU and the next day he was gone. He had very good insurance and very good care and the doctors had a good outlook for him but when its someone's time, its their time. I'm sorry to hear about your friend though, may she rest in peace.

and can explain a lot, especially if she was a brittle diabetic.

The IHS here gives good care, but if you go into their urgent care, you'd better be prepared to spend the day, waiting times can be very long. I've kept friends company there when they've had to go in.

someone so young should not die.
If she had Type I diabetes - that is a very serious illness - with many potential complication.

I am sorry you lost your friend.

if she didn't get the care she needed.

I remember back in the late 90's a woman that worked in the same building I did got the flu and the next thing we knew she was dead.

Upsetting even tho we only knew her to chat a bit on breaks.
