The newest True Detective on HBO Plus (max)

With Jodie Foster blew me away with its first episode. If you like spooky mysteries this is a good one for you. I can't remember when a first episode in a series grabbed me like this one did. Note that you don't have to have seen any of the preious True Detective series to enjoy or follow this, it's a stand-alone series in itself.

Love it! Both female lead roles are well acted, & story line is compelling. Hubby is a fan of the series & have seen the previous seasons. I w need to watch those. When is the next episode of season 4 coming on Max?

but I find the drop the audience in the deep end of the narrative pool to let them either sink or swim a bit tedious – currently I’m not overly impressed.

No idea what the murder of a native woman years earlier has to do with the current case – guess that’s supposed to be part of the mystery.

And the ghost of woman’s son finding the frozen victims comes off as contrived.

Felt it was too X-Files. I trust the creators, so I'm along for the ride, but fully realize that's a personal taste thing.

Though also a lot of personal taste, I like the "drop us into the narrative" style. I love James Joyce and he was doing that at the turn of the century. As a mystery fan, I think it heightens the intensity and makes you pay attention to EVERYTHING which makes red herrings easier to pull off.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson stand alone in that series. Nos 2 & 3 were terrible. I will hold off on this one, it was so much, you figure it out.

Very much like Eyes Wide Shut in that regards. I wonder if it is deliberate in the case of this show's director.

I like that what's happening is ambiguous. Tonight is the finale, so we'll see it there's something 'supernatural' going on or not. I just hope it doesn't pull a 'Lost' and be a lame ending that just ends with no real wrap-up. I haven't seen the earlier seasons, but plan to go back and check them out now.

I find the arctic environment in films very compelling. Make me feel really claustrophobic. There was a series on PBS called The Terror that was about two exploratory ships trapped in the ice when looking for the Northwest Passage. (The Terror was the name of one of the ships) It was very good, but I couldn't finish the series as it made me feel so closed in. And it had kind of a mysterious creepy story line too. Same with the series Fortitude, but I did finish that one.

I didn't know there were 2 seasons. Like I said above, I couldn't finish the first season in one go. It was good, so I want to go back and maybe watch it in smaller bites so to speak. I tried watching many in a row and felt like I was being smothered, lol. The rampant arrogance and stupidity of the officers was mind-blowing. But very well acted for sure.

I think it will be like the first season. Though maybe they dig into the connections they've developed.

And I know I'm in the minority, but I disagree about the ending of LOST. I thought that ending was beautiful.

There will be some 'normal' explanation for the things that happened. I've heard that it was similar with the first season too.

Re: Lost--I didn't hate the ending and I can see it being a nice wrap up of the series. But imo it left too many things unanswered. Of course I can't tell you what now as it's been too long. Back then I was working and there was a group that got together for lunch the day after the show would air, and we'd discuss the episode. So, I was really into it. Just disappointed that there were too many loose ends left when it was over.

The native women cut out her tongue and put it there so that the police would hopefully find the connection. The main native woman's "I have no idea what you are talking about" read to me more of the "well, that's just one story" kind of a response.

I thought the put Otis' body in the dad's car, chop a hole in the ice, and put him in so it looks like he died trying to dispose of the body (like they can probably show he did with the missing woman) was pretty solid.

There were elements of the supernatural that got explore, but, in the end, it was just some guy (or guys, or women--depending on which thing you were wondering). Main difference was this season left open a possible return of the characters.

I was a great noir story with magical realism sprinkled throughout. Incredible take on arctic horror. Solid mystery. Nice parallel to the hyper-masculinity of season 1 (which I also enjoyed and is probably a better season, though not by as much as a lot of people say).

Fully realize people may not like it for a multitude of reasons, but I really don't know why people shit on this season so much.
