Political Animals

Sigornery Weaver as Secretary of State with ambitions toward the White House. Her ex is a former president. She has a gay, drug addict son, and one who isn't either. Her mother (Ellen Burstyne) is an alcoholic. Good cast, but it suffers from mediocre writing. Worth watching, though, I think.

I watched the first season, and your description is pretty correct. And I agree it was worth it. I had heard they got the go ahead for a second season but have not seen anything about it recently. Just wondering if it's coming on soon.

Political Animals is a six-episode American miniseries created by Greg Berlanti. The series aired in the United States on USA Network from July 15 through August 19, 2012.[1][2][3] Sigourney Weaver portrays Elaine Barrish, a divorced former First Lady and Governor of Illinois, as well as the current Secretary of State. While the lead character does have some similarities to Hillary Clinton, Weaver has said in interviews that the show is "very much about families who have been in the White House and the price they've paid for being in the White House and the fact that families who have been in the White House often try to get back in the White House or continue to try and get in the White House."[4]
While it was speculated that the miniseries would lead into a full season, on November 2, 2012, USA Network announced that they have decided to stick with their initial plan of having the show be a miniseries.[5]

Yes, I thought the ending really left it open for a sequel or second season. Too bad, it would have been fun to see Sigourney Weaver's character get into the White House.

I think my main complaint with the series as a whole was that there was too much drama in the family. I wouldn't expect the family to be perfect but each one of them had some kind of issue, even Grandma! I realize that's why they were all there--to create lots of story lines, but it was a little over the top I think. Still I did watch it all, so it wasn't too bad.

I love political dramas and this one started okay, but it got too soap opera-ish and predictable. After I watched that, I went back and watched The West Wing again and my hunger for good political drama was appeased.

I don't know how many times I've watched The West Wing, but it never gets old and I always get something new out of it.
