"How many variations on giving birth are there?"

But it's so much more, with all the social history and an interesting ensemble cast of characters who are fully fleshed out. This is something that the British TV writers are especially good at.

I hope Tenko becomes available (apparently Acorn TV is trying to get it). That's a classic British series about European and Australian women in a Japanese prison camp. I ordered the DVDs from Amazon UK to play on my region-free player, and yes, it holds up very well. At first they stick together, but gradually, the stresses of life in the camps cause some to dangerous rebellion, some to collaboration with the Japanese, and some to pointless enmities with their fellow prisoners. Again, this is a fine ensemble cast, one of the standouts being Stephanie Cole (the aunt in Doc Martin), playing a no-nonsense, by-the-book MD who is forced to do things her medical training never prepared her for. Some of the other actresses will look familiar, too, especially Louise Jameson (Leela in the old Doctor Who, Eleanor Glassen in Doc Martin).

We like Call the Midwife and it's social class opposite, Downton Abbey. I do not have any one particular character that I like best in Call The Midwife, but I do like Anna, the lady's maid best of all in Downton Abbey, just hope they don't change her character season 4.

On Edit: The PBS Roku channel for Washington DC has season 4 "Call the Midwife" episodes - I did not see older episodes. We no longer Tivo it, just wait to watch it on the PBS Roku channel
