"Creeped Out" vs. "The Haunting of Hill House"

The former is for kids; the latter, for adults. I Hoovered through "Creeped Out" but I'm finding "Hill House" tiresome and unnecessarily disturbing and not at all scary after two episodes so far. So much lame dialogue and endless scene padding and jumping back and forth between locations and time periods, and unlikeable characters, that I really am not pulled in. I think the problem is that horror made for kids just cuts to the chase. It focuses on the scary and tries to do it in clever, imaginative ways while the adult horror always carries some baggage that the writer or director or actors want to include to lift it above the genre. In doing so, "Hill House" is weakest at the scares. So far, the scariest scene is when a character is told her brother's rehab will cost $6,000 a month. That got my pulse rate up more than the apparitions or things going bump in the night. I'm only on episode 2 and it's a slog. That's too bad because the 1963 film version was terrific.

Good production values, acting and writing, and some very clever premises. I was looking forward to each episode. As a non-anthology series, "Stranger Things" gets it right and as with "Creeped Out" I wasn't sure I wanted to see a kid's show but was pleasantly surprised after the first episode.

...but if you give it a little more time, you might be surprised at how good it is. Of course, if you're just into jump-scares and "Friday the 13th" type fare, it's probably not for you but I thought it was one of the best "horror" stories I've seen in a very long time. Obviously, YMMV but watch a few more episodes and see what happens...

It's not so bad that I will abandon it. A friend and I rate TV writing (good dialogue; complex, realistic motivation; how badly the actors are struggling to find the character) on a continuum between Madame Secretary and The Good Wife and so far Hill House is closer to The Good Wife, so there's that at least.

You'll appreciate the long route in the end. Totally surprised me. Very good imo

After 2 episodes, I was just "meh".

It's weird to see "Elliott" from ET (Henry Thomas) as a middle aged man. He looks a fair bit like Timothy Hutton though, so he was a good choice.
