From one addiction into another one.

I know this guy, age 44. An alcoholic for decades. Separated from a woman who is also an alcoholic (still married).

He's been to rehab twice and dropped out both times.

Met a woman who has insisted that he go to church with her and to AA meetings.

Sounds promising until you know the rest: He's still secretly drinking (those airplane little bottles) and now that he's accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he hates (really hates) gays.

Early into AA, I heard a lot of wise old-timers tell a lot of newcomers to not start any new relationships for the first year or so and to keep the focus 100% on ourselves.

Not for me to judge, but evidence suggests this guy is not serious about sobriety. I've not seen many people stay in recovery that take on a bunch of new resentments, hatreds and fears.
