lost a lot of blood, spent yesterday in the emergency room, slept for 18 hours, don't really have the energy yet to get into the insurance thing. But I was forced to change insurance companies. 'nuff said. And there's fights on what's covered and when coverage started.

I'm sure it'll work itself out, either in the form of bankruptcy court, ridiculous debt, or endless phone calls (or a combination of all three). I just can't deal with it right now. My wife is trying, so that helps, but it's just a long process. I have to put it out of my mind for a few days, at least.

There's no excuse for our constantly being fucked by insurance companies. They are raking and billions while we deal with the mess caused by their absurd rules The requirements - it's just not fair. The last thing sick people should have to do this battle with these assholes. I truly feel your pain.

A good friend, living on a very limited income ($15,000), was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. All was going pretty well considering - until the FKG insurance company eliminated the co-pay cap. Then all fckg hell broke loose for her economically speaking.

My "provider charge" for a round of IV drip I took home for 2 days (chemo, which was conventional and has been around for decades) was $40K/round. I was told to ignore that and look at the "allowed charge," which was about $23K. But an NIH site showed my chemo to cost $3500/round for both drugs + admin. And that was exactly my out-of-pocket charge.

I believe these insurance cos. are either getting tax deductions by contracting with providers and governments who pay much less than the "allowed charge" (thus the insurance cos. have big "losses" on every round of chemo), or they're getting kickbacks for accepting less than the allowed charge. I'm told by those who know about billing that insurance cos. don't go by their allowed charges; they have separate contracts with providers and drug cos. So actually the billing is a total fabrication.

Something illegal is going on, I just know it.

but I took Stivarga last year, it was still relatively new. Although thanks to my insurance at the time, I didn't have to pay much, when I got my "explanation of benefits" it turns out they were charging $12,000+ a month for this oral chemo. That's just outrageous.

I do better understand when I hear "if you can't afford your prescription, Astra-Zeneca may be able to help" (although that wasn't my med). I used to wonder how they could give it away for free. But that's not the case. They mean, "if you can't afford your CO-PAY", because they'd rather pick up the piddly co-pay on my behalf and collect the real money from insurance.

If the U.S. had collective bargaining for prescription meds, like most real countries, we wouldn't have half the trouble we do now.
