Ankle pain--severe

My GP said with certainty that it was deep, severe synovitis associated with my RA. Gave me a prednisone pack.It never healed completely to the point that I could go for a walk or easily climb stairs. He said it may never totally heal. I am seeing a rheumy now and he said it was mechanical not the RA. He suggested physical therapy and gave me a cortisone shot which didn't help. He's off for the month of February. Neither ordered an MRI or even an X-ray. I should have insisted on that.
I am using crutches, ice for the swelling. I have a TENS unit and a foot soaking pail. I even tried some exercises which just aggravated the pain. The pain is all around the ankle. It's ok at night to sleep and when I'm on the couch with it elevated. Nothing is working. I'm taking motrin, prednisone and neurontin.
Going to call an orthopedist on Tuesday.

It happened out of no where, no sprains, overwork. It just appeared.

Anyone have a clue or suggest anything else to help?

I'm so sorry that you're going through this.

At the very least someone should have ordered x-rays. For all anyone knows, it could be a stress fracture. Or a fracture could be ruled out.

In the meantime, can someone go to a CVS or health food store and pick up a tube of arnica gel for you to try? I use it for sciatica pain and it's also good for bumps, bruises and sore muscles. It should not be used on cut or scraped skin. I have no idea whether it would help you, but it couldn't hurt to see if it helps.

The University of Maryland Medical Center website has good information on arnica, which is an herb in the daisy family:

no help.
Using peppermint salts and tea tree oil to soak. Temorary relief.
A stress fracture sounds very possible. No one has even mentioned it.

Is there a walk-in clinic near you that your insurance covers?
We've found that sometimes they are a good alternative to an ER.

Sending you vibes and healing wishes))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

One is connected to a hospital and I know that they do X-rays. They are a cross between an ER and an urgent care clinic. I'll go tomorrow, it is remarkably not supposed to snow.

emergent care center and they immediately did an X-ray. The ankle is broken pretty bad. They put on a cast, sort of temporary and I have to make an appt.
with an orthopedist. Can't walk on it for 6-8 weeks. They had someone deliver a walker and the orthopedist will order a wheelchair from medicare.

Thanks for your advice.

When she went to our GP, he didn't think her pain was a big deal. It kept hurting, so she went to a walk-in care center, where they did an x-ray and found the fracture. That's why I suggested you try that route.

I am so thankful you found out what was causing the pain. Let's hope the orthopedist can fix you up so that it heals and stops hurting.

The only thing I can add would be to wrap it and take calcium and vitamin D to build up strength. I do exercises in bed to try to build up some sort of strength in my ankle and leg. I had back surgery and then I was a nut and tripped on my walker and now have very bad pain in my foot and ankle. I sure hope you get to feeling better soon. Keep pushing your doctors for real answers. An MRI would be helpful. Take care.

Welcome to DU

Have you tried an ultrasound wand? It usually helps me. It isn't too expensive. The little TENS machine really helps my back.

They did an X-ray and it was broken. Go to see the orthopedist tomorrow and get a cast put on. Renting a wheelchair.

I too have severe ankle pain, though I know it's cause. I've found that keeping flexing it with bands, exercise, a change in diet, ice packs and oxycodone as needed, have all helped.
