Day 12....

I don't like being a slave to scales, so .... no weigh ins.

Sticking to the diet. No wandering off of the path so far.

I'll get a base weight next week, as I have a physical scheduled.
Hope it doesn't depress me too much.

"My solution to weigh-ins is to co tell the nurse I don't want to see or hear the numbers, only the change, until I reach a certain goal."

This is a great idea!
It's easy to get discouraged when the numbers go up,
and a "can-do" state of mind is absolutely necessary to maintain when you're trying to lose weight!

I'm on day 33 (of 165)

I'm losing about 2 lbs per week.
Last week I went on a road trip (2,500 miles)
We visited relatives and I really went off the diet
for the last three days of the trip.

I packed a cooler with FF yogurt, meat chunks, eggs and sparkling water and
did great on the big driving days. Blew it when we hit the last relative's house...pizza parlour and pub food
did me in.

I only gained 2 lbs. though.

SO much easier now that I am working from my home!

It did me in last time around. After I had lost about 30 pounds, I soent about a month traveling. I had some good days, but was in areas with food I had never tasted. I have só me success in avisar iding familiar foods, telling myself that I know what it tastes like, but I haven't quite figured out how to avoid new taste sensations, unless they sound totally gross (bacon wrapped cupcakes)!

Since you mention Kroger, I guess you are in the States. With the pub fries, I thought you might be in the UK. I'm an American, living in Denmark. Here any cheese below 17% fat is officially considered low fat. It is pretty easy to find 10%, and occasionally I find 6%, so going for the crust is a great idea.

Thanks for the suggestion!

15. If you can get fromage frais or quark
Fri Jun 12, 2015, 01:58 PM
Jun 2015

Do you know fromage frais? It has usually about .05% fat and a very neutral flavor. I have made a mock cheesecake by mixing in eggs and some thickener (ground oatbran, tsp tapioca flour, or equivalent) and a dollop of low fat Phila cream cheese. No crust. I haven,t made it in a long while, so I cannot remember the proportions, but it has come out lovely. Beware of the number of eggs...too many and the texture is not right!

I feel for you on the four pounds. It is water weight. The other day the nurse just me I had lost, but not how much. I had had a lot of salt the previous day, so I was prepared to hear anything.

Oh, I forgot to say that quark, if you don't know it, is also super low in fat, but it is a bit acidic. Probably OK for a lemon flavored cheesecake. And I have tried straining yoghurt overnight. The lowest fai ones are too runny (0.01%).

In fact, I have always been curious about quark. Is it "whey"?
If so, I'm eating curds and you're eating whey.

Those four mysterious pounds (+1) disappeared!

Now I'm just 3 lbs away from my first goal.

Pretty psyched about it.

I'm going to make some chili with ground turkey.

18. I haven't tried to use the cottage cheese smoothed out...
Sat Jun 13, 2015, 12:03 PM
Jun 2015

I eat it as a side dish with meat on my PP days. I'm not crazy about it, so I avoid it on PV days...

I'm using this recipe:

http://dukantopia.com/2012/06/04/no-bean-chili/

I made a double recipe of this last week with ground beef. It turned out to taste surprisingly sweet. I don't know
why, as there is no sugar in it. I checked the can of crushed tomatoes, no sugar in there either.
I'm figuring it might be the red wine vinegar.

Anyway, my husband and daughter loved it! Tasted like sloppy joe's. I thought I'd have to freeze
it and eat it on PV days, but between the 3 of us, we demolished it in 4 days.

This time I'm using half the vinegar and using turkey instead of beef. I haven't been able to
find the FF cheddar cheese, but I did use the FF sour cream and raw onion to top it with.

Are you walking every day?

19. Thanks for mentioning turkey!
Sun Jun 14, 2015, 03:09 PM
Jun 2015

It reminded me that I had some in the oven and it was about 40 minutes overdone!
I'll have to check out the chili recipe... it sounds good. The hot sauce probably has a fair amount of sugar (ketchup is about half sugar, apparently), but otherwise ... hunh. Have you checked the sour cream? 2 grams of sugar per ounce (and those 2 g are the only carbs).

FF cottage cheese: when I was a freshman in college I ate low-fat cottage cheese and Spam (yuck) every weekend for nearly every meal to save money. I have never had Spam again, and I can't eat CC in its "pure" form. Actually, I am a bit lactose intolerant, which doesn't help, but it is the one dairy product I have problems getting it past my tongue!

Walking? No, unfortunately. I have a chest infection at the moment and zero energy. How about you?

20. Day 45 Update...
Wed Jun 17, 2015, 06:45 PM
Jun 2015

Lost over 2 lbs since last weight check!!

I am weighing my self every other day, the morning after a PP day.

So I have now lost 17 lbs, and hit my first weight goal! 48 pounds to go!
The Dukan site estimates I should hit that around December, so I have
a long "weigh" to go, but I'm feeling pretty cocky and think I can do it.

I am VERY happy with that!

Regarding my exercise...

I have been swimming pretty regularly (2-3 times per week) for almost 3 years. There have been
periods where I have been unable to swim, due to health problems or, more recently, the pool
where I swim was closed for 3 months for repairs and re-opened at the end of May.

I swim laps, I'm up to 100 per workout. So that's about a mile and a half, 3 days a week.
Before I started Dukan, I did NOT lose any weight doing this!

I love to swim, and I do it for the boost in circulation and meditative benefits.

Since starting Dukan, I make sure I walk EVERY night. I shoot for 1/2 hour,
sometimes a little more or less depending on the weather. I think the walking
and swimming combined is helping me lose this weight.

Hope that chest infection is GONE!

I am sure the combination of swimming and walking is a huge help. I have about 70 pounds to lose, which seems impossible, but when I get well I will get back to the gym every day. i went to the doctor, and I have acute bronchitis, so it will be another week at least of trying not to stress my body.

At least I am drinking more water!

22. Day 46
Thu Jun 18, 2015, 11:14 AM
Jun 2015

You and I are both trying to lose about the same amount!

The Dukan true weight has me at 11 lbs more than I'm personally shooting for.
So I'm going for a 65 lb. total loss....as I said yesterday, 48 to go!

The water drinking hasn't been a problem for me (so far)...
I'm drinking Perrier with a hit of various Mio zero calorie flavor shots.
Although I used to be addicted to Diet Coke, I prefer fruit flavoring
now...probably to satisfy unconscious cravings for sugary, carby FRUIT.

I used that enormous head of cauliflower to make "soup"...found a recipe
on line that used just onion, cauliflower and stock. I added celery for flavor.
Not a perfect soup! The directions said that I should add water "to cover".
That's what I did, but I think my celery addition caused it to be too watery
after I blended it together. Think thin gruel instead of creamy goodness...

Oh well, it tasted great and it filled me up. I had two mugs before dinner
and hardly ate any of my tomato and green pepper salad.
I have a LOT left over for tomorrow, as the family turned their noses up in disdain!

On edit: I'm so glad you're here with me, Flor... I spent a lot of time at the beginning
of this diet reading blogs and posts detailing successful and not-so-successful "journeys".
I wanted to keep a casual log and have a little feedback...

My absolute favorite is a guy who blogged throughout the diet for "How Things Work".

27. Holy Cow...I'm on day 50!
Mon Jun 22, 2015, 08:34 AM
Jun 2015

No weigh in this morning, because yesterday was a PV day.
Father's Day!

My daughter flew in from New Hampshire for the week.
Everyone wanted to go to a Hungarian restaurant near the airport,
but I nixed it at the last minute after perusing the menu on line.
It's one of my absolute favorite restaurants, but there is NOTHING there
that I could eat! Dumplings are definitely OUT until the cruise phase is over!

So we went for Mexican food instead. Plain salad with salsa and fajitas.
There was a lot of oil involved, but I resisted the chips! Also, I ate a fair
amount of what I am sure was full-fat cheese. On the whole, I think the
damage was minimal...

Actually, the salad was great! It came to the table with a dressing on
the side, so I just put salsa on it instead. I think I will ask for salsa on
the side for every salad! It makes a great substitute for oily dressings.

Positives: I wore a pair of white jeans which had been uncomfortably snug
the last time I pulled them out. This time, no muffin-top!

Jun 2015

One of my weaknesses is going along with ideas which are not in my best interest. And it sounds like a great substitute. A bit more oil is less problematic than the chips or tortillas would have been, in my experience.

I am getting ready to make some turkey soup (turkey and bouillon). I had a small amount of honey in one of my many cups of tea today, but otherwise have had just protein. I hope to get a little bit of exercise tomorrow (slow walking, anyway), after spending 4 days at home.

Good for you on those white jeans! I love it when I can get back into a piece of clothing I've had to put aside!

Lost .4 lbs....

Had hoped for more.

I am back under the first goal weight, but still a pound over what I was.
I compared my weight loss with Marshall Brain's at the same 51 day mark,
and at this point he had lost 11 more pounds than me.

I am hoping that the past week's frustrations are down to "monthly" fluctuations.

I'm glad you are feeling better! I have a dog, so there's always a little, sad-eyed
canine pouting at me to make sure I get the walk in!

When you did the diet last time, did you do the exercises that Dukan prescribes?
I think there are three of them...

Beware! Men have different hormones. My husband can lose pounds twice as fast as I can (when he diets!)-

Today I had more protein than veggies, but my fingers are a bit swollen, so there must have been hidden wheat or more salt than I THOUGHT.

I need to get back to exercising...my voice is still horrendous, as is my cough (dry, hacking), as soon as I move faster than a snail, so I guess I still should wait a bit longer.

What specific exercises are you talking about? And are you doing them? I was given a food list by my doctor and told to walk 30 minutes a day. For the protein plus veggie days, were you given either a maximum or minimum amount of protein? They say "unlimited for the protein days.

Jun 2015

Gained .2 pounds!

I'm holding back on the freakout until AFTER this monthly water retention fest is over.
Still under the 1st goal mark.

My husband is doing the Dukan diet with me, but with his own "revisions", which
include unlimited beer, mayonnaise, toast and occasional binges on potato chips.
He will not tell me how much weight he's lost, because he doesn't want me to fly
into a rage. LOL, he's a VERY smart guy!

It is frustrating to have such a great metabolism! I could survive a period of famine
better than anyone I know.

As far as the exercises go...Dr. Dukan insists that in addition to walking, 4 different
exercises should be done. One for the stomach, one for the backs of the arms, one
for "buttocks", and one for thighs. They are detailed in the chapter entitled: Being Active

I haven't done them. I figure my swimming will tone my arms, thighs and buttocks!
The stomach, well, I think I need to lose another 25 lbs before I even begin to tackle THAT business.

As far as the protein requirements on the PV days, the book says to eat 2/3 protein to 1/3 vegetables.
Protein must reign supreme to stay in ketosis.... I'm thinking of picking up some test strips
to check for ketosis.

I'm leaving for a week's vacation on Monday. Temperatures should be in the 79s or 89s, instead of the 59s and 69s, so maybe I can get rid of this cough. In any case, I am looking forward to walking around, some swimming, and general relaxation.I know exactly what the food temptations, and I will have to use some techniques to minimize the damage! Maybe I can find ketosis strips. Do they give a range, or is the answer a straight yes or no?

Today is a PP day for me, so I guess I will get some lox today.

Jun 2015

Well, finally dropped another pound, so at least the scale is back to
moving in the right direction!

The weight is NOT falling off like most Dukan bloggers...

BUT, it IS coming off.... and I am committed to sticking to this
until November.

I have to remember that the diet survived my daughter's
week long visit. She had a list of places she wanted to eat
at while she was here, and I dodged a couple of those bullets
by either staying home or ordering smart. Every time I go out
to eat, I try to order within the guidelines, but there is always
oil or full-fat cheeses to contend with. I'm better off preparing
my own foods, by far!

18 lbs. down in 8 weeks, so still running about 2lbs/week.

Haven't found the ketosis strips yet. I'll look for them today.

Hope your health is back and you are enjoying your walk.
It is a pain to get the tennis shoes on and get out the door,
but I do admit to enjoying the evening walks with my husband.

Wed Jul 1, 2015, 08:21 AM
Jul 2015

I had to weigh myself 3 times before I could believe it.

Over 21 lbs lost!

My pants started sliding off yesterday. I tried wearing three different pairs
and they were all too loose to wear out of the house. I was pretty sure that
I would show a weight loss this morning, but almost 4 lbs! What a pleasant
surprise.

I don't think Dr. Dukan spends enough time in the book detailing the horrors
of water weight and women's menstrual cycles. I'm approaching menopause,
and I had not had a period in three months when that unexpected 2 lb. weight gain struck.
If I had not made the mental commitment to stick with this plan until November, I
might have fallen off the wagon. The weight loss work was apparently still going
on under all of those swollen cells.

When I hit the 25 lb loss mark, I'm going to take a yoga class as a reward.
The swimming and walking tends to tighten up my leg muscles, and I could
use some stretching.

When I hit the 50 lb loss mark, I'm going to tackle my rotten core with
a pilates class.

He's down to his lowest weight since we both quit smoking,
13 years ago!

Hope your vacation is relaxing and fun!

Wow! And how great it is that you lost more, given the hormonal handicap women have!

I-m having a great time. I have most of my energy back and my cough, at least here (the Azores) is better.

When I get home I will print out some of your posts and get started again. Keep it up!
Wow again!

38. Day 63... gained back 1 lb.

Cheated a little yesterday. It was a PP day, but I had a tomato and some asparagus with dinner.

Now that some weight loss is noticeable, my mother, who lives across the street from me,
has put her "you're looking pale" bullshit food pushing into 1st gear... sigh
So I ate a tomato to shut her up!
She also insisted on bringing berries and cherries over.
Not for HER consumption. Just to leave here.
She KNOWS I don't allow them on my diet.

I'm sure that this is only the beginning of her attempted sabotages!

40. First day back on PP

I may resort to taking out the scale (sigh...), that way we can chart together. It may take me a couple of days to get up the courage (and I may need new batteries!).

Because the balance of water is so much a part of the diet, it is really common to have the scale stay stuck and then suddenly drop again, as you've seen. Hang in there--it's going in the right direction most of the time!!

(Should we take this conversation to our private boxes? It's getting to be quite a scroll down!)

44. Day 71... 25.5 lbs lost, total.

Took me a while to get past that 25 lb mark.
I still don't trust that I won't mysteriously gain back over it.

Today I begin searching for a good yoga class!

I am going to do Abascal TQI
http://toquietinflammation.com/

I had gotten into it in October and it really helped my rashes and aches but my roommate made Almond Rocca, twice at Christmas. I got through the first week end okay, but the second week end was a slo-mo avalanche. Since I lost my condo and almost lost my only remaining family member due to illness, my stress level has been wrecking havoc on my body.

But this Dukan looks like it could help with that too, and most importantly, you have been able to work it and lose weight!

Way to go.

15 more to go, but I'm not really sure I need to lose another 15.

Staying on the diet until November though, just as I committed.

Feeling great. Looking good. Take THAT, menopause!

That is all.

Ran into a DU friend of mine yesterday at a fundraiser, and she
didn't recognize me, until I made a little spectacle of waving...

SHE has lost weight too!

The Dukan Diet has worked for me... I'm close to the "consolidation" phase,
designed to gradually add carbs back into my life.

I have been very lucking in having Flor-de-jasmim as my diet buddy, giving
me encouragement from afar!

64. After a three week plateau, I have hit my "Dukan True Weight" goal.
Fri Oct 9, 2015, 01:46 PM
Oct 2015

I have lost 55 lbs. since May 4 and am now on Day 159 of this diet.

My blood pressure and cholesterol levels have gone from sky-high to
low normal!

I still want to lose another 11 lbs, and I'm continuing the "Cruise" phase
of this diet until mid-November. Then I start adding carbs back into my mouth-hole.

The Dukan "True Weight" is a weight determined by several
factors to be a reachable and sustainable weight and is usually
higher than most dieter's "ideal" weight.

I would recommend this diet very highly for anyone who likes meat and fish.
