Do flavoring extracts 'go bad'?

Can I use a bottle of maple extract (to make syrup) that's been in Gram's cupboard for goodness-knows-how-long? It may have been used once, but was sealed so tight I had to use a grippy to get the lid off.

It smells normal

it's pure extract Viva_La_Revolution Jun 2012 #2
Any non-artificial extract is good forever. It's mostly alcohol. HopeHoops Jul 2012 #3

I only buy real maple syrup - costs more but you use less. HopeHoops Jul 2012 #5

There's no comparison. Corn syrup "maple flavored syrup" sucks big time. HopeHoops Jul 2012 #7

into some not very nice original components. When in doubt, toss it out. A new bottle is not going to break the bank.

and it's the difference between syrup or no syrup for pancakes cause I don't go to the store for less than 10 items ever

I guess I could do strawberry instead

no more store bought 'maple' syrup for us!

1 c. boiling water
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
boil it for 10-20 min to thicken it up
1 t. maple extract
1/2 t. vanilla

I also made strawberry

1 c. pureed strawberries
1/2 c. boiling water
2 c. white sugar
1/2 t. vanilla at the end

the grandsons decided they tasted best mixed together
