Sunday dinner is usually a big thing at our home. I say usually because my schedule is irregular, so I don't always have Sunday evening off, but when I do I try to do something that everyone likes. My oldest doesn't live with us anymore, but he usually shows up. My in-laws come occassionally and my son or daughter often bring a friend. Today I have 5 people to feed.
I went to the market today and bought 3 slabs of St. Louis ribs. I rubbed them down with spices and they are in the smoker. I'll smoke them with hickory for 2.5 hours then coat them with a cherry glaze, wrap them up in aluminum foil, and cook them for another 2.5 hours, all at 225F. I like gnaw-off-the-bone ribs, not fall off the bone ribs. There will be cole slaw, baked beans, baked potatoes, and a nice loaf of bread I picked up at the market. I'll make some homemade root beer today.

(146,218 posts)I also grew up with a big Sunday meal, generally something that could be put in the oven for a few hours while we were at church.
I was dreaming of pot roast last night, as I have some really good potatoes and carrots. I like to make it on the stovetop with a chinese based broth and cook until it is simply falling apart.
But, that would require DH going to the store relatively soon to get the meat....
so we may have broccoli soup and pork chops or a pork/broccoli stir fry.
We shall see.
Enjoy your meal and your family.

(14,890 posts)test recipe from American's test kitchen. Not all that flavorful although the "garnish", flowerettes sautéed in butter then added a splash of sherry wine vinegar was awesome. I'm definitely going to use more sherry wine vinegar!

(106,886 posts)Apparently the end triangular cut wasn't very saleable. So ranchers and the and the ranch crew kept it and made a slow cooked dish out of the cut. "Who has the best tri tip?" is a a pretty common topic.

(35,687 posts)Wow, Major, you're pulling out all the stops. I could maybe do the ribs in one day but I think I'd have to draw the line at the homemade root beer.
I'm thinking stir-fried rice for tonight, made with beef and vegetables. I'm not sure if I'll have the energy, though, as I already made a fresh loaf of pumpernickel bread this weekend and this morning, a big pot of potato soup. I put Italian sausage in the potato soup, so there was a little more to it than the usual soup. I plan on giving it away to a couple friends, even though it turned out so well I haven't been able to stay away from it all day.

(4,299 posts)I went here http://biology.clc.uc.edu/fankhauser/cheese/rootbeer_jn0.htm because of
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php/www.fas.usda.gov/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=236x76848 . That recipe calls for three to four days.
Thanks.

(21,024 posts)I cleaned out one of the planters yesterday. Steamed the kale then chopped it and sauteed it with onion and bacon. Smoked 4 chops for an hour or so this morning. It gets layered in a baking dish with mashed potatoes on top. Homemade sponge cake with strawberries and schlag for dessert.

(12,253 posts)I made cranberry-chocolate chip scones for breakfast, we had leftovers from my Mexican take out for lunch (carnitas and nopalitos in tomatillo salsa) and I just wasn't interested in getting anything big started this evening. We had hash brown potatoes with onion and roasted red pepper cooked in, crispy bacon, 7 grain toast, and eggs over easy. For 'dessert' we will have a compote of fresh pineapple, strawberry, and toasted coconut.
