(146,218 posts)Flag is out and we are about to go out for a sea trial to test the newly rebuilt engine. Keep your fingers crossed.
We are in a very, very popular spot for watching fireworks in LA, so will sit tight tonight.
I've got some cheddarwursts and other snacks and some good wine.
I will be celebrating the end of boat repairs!

(146,218 posts)Oh, well. What can you do.
Hope you have a great fourth, maddezmom! Do the kids like fireworks? I hated them as a kid, but I love them now and we have a great seat for some fabulous fireworks tonight.

(135,060 posts)So a few of us are just going to chill here and relax.
Sorry about the boat.

(106,886 posts)SLO doesn't hold fireworks (fire hazard) but all the beach towns have shows over the water.

(146,218 posts)We will have a massive fireworks display here with lots and lots of boats on the water. Will be sharing food with friends and neighbors. Should be lots of fun.
Wish you were here!

(135,060 posts)Got little neck clams to start and various snacks, etc. Dinner will be filets, veggie kabobs, large green salad and corn on the cob. Dessert is just going to be a variety of berries with fresh whipped cream.
Fajitas would have been a great idea for a group!

(175,742 posts)We had five days of chilly, damp weather and today it's around 80 and sunny for a change. Going to a local place with an outdoor eating area. A great people-watching place as well!

(175,742 posts)I hope that your engine stops over-heating. That must be annoying!

(106,886 posts)I love people watching, too.

(175,742 posts)And an interesting people-watching time it was. Unfortunately, an old man fell across the street from the restaurant. Several people went to his rescue, and came to the restaurant asking for water and napkins because the man was bleeding from the nose. Some of the waitstaff joined the passersby who were helping; then an ambulance arrived and eventually took the man to the hospital.
There's a senior citizen building not far from where this took place and I imagine he lives there. Afterward, a hook and ladder came to clean up the sidewalk, though only after the police took photos.
I had excellent cream of broccoli soup and shrimp tempura. Your potluck picnic sounds like fun!
No fireworks here either. My town stopped having them a couple of years ago because of security issues since the town to the west of us is on the rough side. I imagine the expense of hiring police from other towns played a part in the decision as well.
On edit: I'll watch the Washington, D.C., fireworks on PBS.

I'm gonna' steal madezmom's idea for dessert of berries and whipped cream.
cbayer, as I read your posts, I find myself wanting to see what you see tonight. Any chance of you shooting a pic or two?
I don't know if you have that capability out on your boat.
Even though it's over-heating, you'll figure it out and soon be back to normal.
If I walk to the end of the block off my private road, I can see fireworks across the skyline of Manhattan. Might do that this year. I'm one of those people who hate crowds, so I haven't been going to fireworks for the last six or seven years.

(146,218 posts)Depending on his mood, he may get some great footage, and, if he does, I will be glad to share it with you.
I'm with you where crowds are concerned, which is why i really like to be this close but be on the boat. It's pretty perfect.
I remember fireworks in Manhattan - East River IIRC. My parents took us to the Washington monument when I was a kid, and I spent the entire time huddled under a blanket just wishing for it to end.
Your dinner sounds like the perfect Revolution Day meal. I love doing steaks in the skillet. My favorite is to cook quickly in butter, turn off heat, add fresh rosemary, then spoon the rosemary butter over the meat while it rests.
Can you tell me how you make your potato cakes?

(9,791 posts)For the first time in four days we had no rain! The rain left and the heat moved in to the tune of 90 degrees. A neighbor entertained us with an impressive fireworks display around 9 PM. One of the two cats was not thrilled with the racket.
