And mashed pots.

Edited. Pork loin wasn't thawed in time.

But, man this was good!

Tomato and cucumber salad from my garden.

(Sarah Palin's got nothing on me. HA!)

My brother, who lives down in Homer, is camp manager and cook/baker for the Donlin gold mine prospect out in Western Alaska. One of his Native friends took him on a successful moose hunt a couple of weeks ago and he came back with about 400 pounds of meat, which he was kind enough to share with us. If you've never had moose meat, it is WONDERFUL, tasty and lean and not gamey like venison or caribou. Another Native friend had given him some 100-year-old sourdough starter from Sitka. This is a very prized possession, but I got him to cut loose with some of that, too.

So this morning, stew is in the crock pot, the bread dough is on its first rise (oh, I ground my own whole wheat flour, too, in the Vitamix), and I'm just kicking back waiting to eat. Life is good.

Here's a picture of the sunrise from my brother's front yard. He works a two-week on/two-week off rotation.

Another thing he came back with this time was 8 oz. of gold that he panned over a two-week period. He didn't share any of that. . They're going to Europe on vacation.

I was planning to make soup and actually had it in progress, but a friend stopped by and offered to make a favorite dish for me: sausage with pasta. It is so good--a little on the hot side, what with red peppers in it and all.

I had salad, too, which is this lovely brown-speckled salad green (heirloom) that I bought from the farmer's market Friday. Asiago-parmesan dressing with crunch provide by Chinese noodles on top.

Red wine.

Rocky road ice cream for dessert.

This is my last night in America for awhile and I'm at my dad's house.

Kind of sad and excited and nervous all at the same time.

And I'm about to watch the Red Sox win the League Championship :fingers crossed:
