Unlike all others, it doesn't TASTE canned and the caraway seeds boost it up
a level or two even over the jarred or plastic refrigerated sauerkrauts -- and
Google for "Bigos" recipes... Polish Hunter's Stew with meat and more meat
and lots of sausage types -- it's pretty incredible.

(6,057 posts)I prefer to do this in a slow cooker but you can do it covered and simmered using a single pot on the stove.
I use a pkg. (16 oz.) of quality sauerkraut, a can of diced tomatoes & green chiles, a can of chicken broth, 4 oz. bacon, 1 cup of white onion (chopped), minced garlic or garlic powder (2 cloves or to taste), paprika (about 2 teaspoons or to taste), a cored granny smith apple cut into large chunks (skin on), a little brown sugar (to taste) and a sprinkling of caraway seeds and a bay leaf.
Brown bacon slightly and saute with onion and garlic on the stove over medium heat. Place all ingredients in slow cooker.
I like a lot of paprika, but it's kind of a taste thing.
I'd recommend grilling or broiling or frying the sausage separately.
