I want to make callalily's Vietnamese Pineapple Chicken Soup but I have to go to the market for fish sauce and also mung bean sprouts. Need some shitakes, too.

(146,218 posts)I'm going to make some bacon wrapped hot dogs, because that's what we have and I feel like it. So there.
Will balance with another dose of that apple and radish salad that has really grown on me.
Off to the market tomorrow!

(106,886 posts)nothing hits the spot like a hot dog, dijon mustard and pickle relish on a bun. That's my basic go to dog but add ons make the plate if on hand. Slivered cabbage, cheese, bacon, onion ...

(6,057 posts)...... for breakfast this morning. I used 2 cups of chicken stock, 1/8 cup orzo, 1 egg, juice of 1 lemon,
salt and pepper. Very simple, very quick and easy to make, and tasty.
Dinner..... left overs from last night.

(106,886 posts)mixed salad, chunky cranberry sauce, Italian pastries from our favorite home town bakery in New England (she ordered them on line for shipping). An hour of round table talk over coffee.
The Vietnamese soup sounds great.

(106,886 posts)I guess it's the basic 5-spice. I'm not that familiar with other types because I tried a random brand 5-spice before and it was crappy so I never tried it again. Since it's in a few recipes I want to try, I bought the basic "McCormick" gourmet Chinese 5-spice at the grocery store that has fennel, anise, ginger, licorice root, cinnamon and cloves (hey, that's 6! lol). I know last time I bought some crappy stuff, because this stuff even smells SO much better!
I totally made it up as I went along tonight as I was super short on time. I stir fried the veggies first...heated some oil in the wok, put in some minced garlic/chilies/ginger paste, dumped in the veggies, gave it a tbsp. of oyster sauce and soy sauce near the end and that was it.
The shrimp was pre-cooked so I just started with heating the oil and garlic/chilies/ginger paste, threw the shrimp in the wok, added 5-spice and some oyster sauce and it was done in 2 minutes.
The salad was just a jumble of what I had: iceberg, arugula, spinach...I added shredded carrot, snow peas, sliced cucumbers and some raw bean sprouts. The dressing was just fish sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, ginger paste and honey. Oh, and a dash of 5-spice since it smelled so good on the shrimp.
Served everything with some toasted cashews and sesame seeds, some hoisin for shrimp dip for the kids, and the rice noodles.
Was that too in depth? LOL. I enjoyed it but the kids were split - the older ones liked it and the younger ones didn't. It wasn't that much different than my normal stir fry but I think the chilies in the paste made it too spicy for them. I'll have to leave the chilies out next time. Funny, they love hot wings, but won't touch anything spicy anywhere else.
