The Breville Smart Oven - I bought it!

I've had my eye on this crazy thing for a while now. My college dorm room-style toaster oven was just old and dirty, but it still worked. So I've been looking at this crazy expensive toaster oven they got out there to make the leap as far as possible.

I mean, this is a convection toaster oven, OK? It's big enough to cook a 13" pizza. It has bells and whistles to alert the bells and whistles on this sweet ride. It apologizes because it can't yet spread the cream cheese on your bagel for you. I'd seen it before and laughed, but then I saw it on Consumer Reports. It's their top rated model and it's a Recommended.

And it's got a price tag to match. MSR is $299, but you can usually find it at $249. That's what CR put it down as. That's what it is at Amazon right now. And I'd convinced myself that, OK, the end of 2012, I'll have some mad money set aside and I can get this then. I'll cook loaves of bread in it instead of using the bread machine, I'll never turn on my regular oven again basically, save all that energy heating the 0.8 cubic foot interior instead of the 4 cubic feet of my big one. End of 2012.

Today I gather myself up and go to the Sam's Club. I have to get dish soap and maybe hearing aid batteries. And in that indomitable Sam's Club way, I'd found a busted package of lotion and cheap Laughing Cow wedges and parchment paper, and then...

There was the Breville Smart Oven. One time buy. $169.

They are so evil. I am so weak. It would never be that cheap again. If I left and came back for it in a couple of days, they'd be gone. Or they'd still be there, back up to $249 or maybe $229, but never, no, never at $169 ever again.

My power plan is 100% Wind!

True, it's the Mozzarella, Sun-Dried Tomato, and Basil flavor, but 8 wedges in each wheel is 24. $3.85/24 is 16 cents a wedge. I will live with M, SDT, & B for that price.

I mainly thought of french fries, but this isn't something we eat all that often.

Of course I do the "fries" and sweet potato fries but so far I have done many stirfrys, sloppy joes, polenta, risotto, apples (like pie without the crust), fried rice and pot stickers.

I'm doing chicken wings tonight.

It's really a great toy. Sure I can live without it but now that I have it I wouldn't want to.

For fries alone it's worth it. I was never much of a fry maker before but now I have them all the time now and without the greasy mess and I think they taste better than oven fries.

I think I'm going to look into it, because almost every meal for the T-man includes a fry of some sort.

Look on line for the you tube demos. They've been big in Europe for years. Even if you do fish sticks and chicken nuggets it's easier than heating up the oven. I haven't been this in love with a gadget since I got my Vitamix....

And Costco has the best deal that I've seen.

I use it just about every day. I use it more than my microwave. I hardly ever use my big oven anymore because most things will fit in it. Warm up times are faster, and it uses considerably less energy.

I got mine refurbed from Amazon. I think it was $150. I couldn't tell it wasn't brand new. I've had it for a couple of years. If it broke tomorrow, I'd order another one the same day. It's even well worth $250 if you had to pay that much.

I know the meals themselves say don't use a toaster oven, but I don't think they had these bad boys in mind.

Instead of my breadmaker. I think I got the water too hot and killed the yeast. Two sad little dense loaves. Oh, well, live and learn.
