What's for din-din, Monday, August 18, 2014.

Well, I had to start this thread just so I could crow about the wonderful dinner I just made.

I am using the Italian cookbook bible and starting with the basics.

I made an amazing risotto with celery. Celery, you say? Yes. It could not have been more perfect.

On the side, but perfect with the risotto, simply fried eggplant. Not breaded, just fried.

Nom, nom, nom.

How does downed tree sound?

Yes, last night a neighbor's tree fell down and took out our electricity and cable. Electricity fixed in the middle of the night, but no cable or internet until tomorrow.

Have to run--only have 1" left on library computer session!

Hope all is fixed tomorrow.

We have what I suspect is typical Italian internet. We have to reset it about 40 times a day. Like Italians, it is very on until it isn't', lol.

And cable/satellite is out of the question, but not really missed.

Just about every curry related spice you can think, a little ketchup & soy sauce to moisten the ground beef mixture and an egg to bind it all on the broiler. Spicy mint mayo to spread on toasted buns. Thinly sliced cukes (recipe recommends using a mandolin but that just shouts "Danger Will Robinson!" to me). Baby greens.

I've had lots of Mandarin, Thai and Vietnamese foods. But somehow never tried curry much. So it's a trial and error entry to curry.

All smells really good, though.

I'm making bistecca fiorentina. Baked potato on the side and probably a salad since I don't think I have a tomato that's ripe enough.

If I had to guess, I would say it has something to do with steak and spinach.

Close?

Maddezmom is coming over here in a few weeks and we will have some feasts. Will keep you up to date.

Marinate it in olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper and lemon. Grill (I can't, of course) on a hot fire and serve rare. No spinach involved.

She told me she's going there. I'm jealous!

I am going to do them on the stove to with marsala.

No grill here either. It's one of the things I am going to put on my list of things she needs to get.

Wish you were joining us here.

I can't recall ever seeing a grill at any of my relatives' homes, even if they had a yard or terrace.

It certainly seems beautiful where you are. Wish I could, too.

I'll stop by on the way home from work. Probably my usual: veggie lo mein, beef and broccoli, red "bbq" pork.

My Mandarin cousin would go "Agh! Lo mein? That's Cantonese."

Sort of like the attitudes about New England clam chowder and Manhattan clam chowder here, I guess.

Go figure.

I agree with what you said. Most folks don't know the difference, so I tend not to regionalize...

Sorta like when a Brit asks "Why don't you speak like the Americans on 'Dallas'?" We all get lumped in also.
