I have put together black bean burritos and sautéed some brussels sprouts. Now, I'm going to make some guacamole to have with chips as a starter. And then there is an open can or corn and a red pepper on the edge that I think will make a good side.

Hopefully the younguns will like it. If not, there is leftover popeye's they can munch on.

Enjoy your chili!

i'd just put the corn and pepper in with the burrito for some extra texture, but i'm lazy like that.

hope you're having a blast with the kiddos!

Not the loin chops, but the O-bone. Heck, they were on sale.

With mashed spuds w/ sour cream and green onions. Steamed green beans.

17. Same thing happened to my sister and me when we were children. Family went to a cafe
Tue Oct 7, 2014, 06:01 PM
Oct 2014

and after we were half way through the meal, Dad said something about us eating baby cows. My sister and I cried and cried and never again have we knowingly eaten veal. I never would eat lamb and I know my sister wouldn't eat it.

I made a sweet potato mash for Sunday lunch. It was mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel, orange juice maple syrup, and a little butter. The 5 & 6 yr. old children were unfamiliar with it, but two tasted it willingly. The third child was in tears because her father told her that "in our family, you always need to at least taste something before deciding you don't want to eat it." She acted like he had made her taste pig slop and glared at me (because I was the cook). Her little brother loved it. OTOH, she loved steamed cabbage with caraway! I just don't get it.

18. My parents did that with me re: rabbit

Told me it was chicken. (I think it was during the beef shortage of '73.) Even though they knew I would eat anything, I did have a pet rabbit at the time.

About a year or two later, my father gave away the pet rabbit because we kids were ignoring it, so he gave it to my aunt who had a farm in northern RI. What he didn't tell me, until I was 19, was that my aunt's family had it for dinner that night.

"She ate my Babe-the-Bunny?!?!?"

"That's why we didn't tell you the whole truth back then, son."

<long pause>

I asked..."Was she good?"

Already made. Yay.

I think I'll make more Brussels sprouts later.

And a green salad.

And maybe, just maybe, if I have enough energy: GUACAMOLE!!!

I saw some at the "prepared foods store," formerly known as a grocery store, and I was salivating at the sight. They only wanted $12.98 a lb for it, so needless to say, I said I'll make my own. Have two giant avocados anyway.

10. It's been a bad food day, Dr. Oz, sorry.

Went to lunch with a cousin who lives about two hours away by public transportationh. One bus, one light rail ride. Culinarily speaking, her suburb seems the other side of the world from mine!

Went to a long-time local restaurant; sandwiches, salads, so on. Lord almighty, everything on the menu seemed huge and grease-laden. Even the salads were enormous. I had to finhd something! I ordered the appetizer sampler. Yikes. Breaded fried zucchini. Breaded fried shrimp. Breaded fried onion rings. Fried quesadilla. Three bowls of gooey sauces.

I realize this is a first-world problem; too much food. I just was quite surprised by the amount of heavy stuff on the menu with no real alternatives for lighter eaters. The soup option wouldn't have been much better: loaded potato.

And then we spent the afternoon looking at old family photos and supper was burgers.

Tomorrow, V-8 for two meals to get back on track.

i am a pretty light eater and struggle to find something the right size when we go out, especially if we're not going straight home and can't take the leftovers with us.
