Somebody invented this thing in the '40's and it made the most fantastic grilled cheese sandwiches. Little round flying saucers that were sealed so you didn't have melted cheese dripping over your fingers and out the back on your lap.
Fruit pies, faux knishes... all you needed was two slices of bread or some puff pastry and filling. Great snacks.
Well, I just ordered one.

Lets see if it's as good as my childhood memories.
(Got a big brick of Velveeta, too-- might as well do it right. Grilled Velveeta and tomato. Can't wait!)

(9,791 posts)We had one in the travel trailer to use over an open fire. Ours was square so a slice of bread fit perfectly in it.

(111,277 posts)sealed triangle sandwiches. My favorite was to do sort of a French toast prep with a mushroom and Swiss cheese filling, pinch of nutmeg. They were divine, crispy and toasted on the outside and with a delicate but high protein filling that didn't squirt out all over the place. They were also good for work, either cold or nuked.

(146,218 posts)My kids loved them because they essentially made hot pockets.
Hope it's as good as you remember.
Velveeta is one of my embarrassing pleasures.

(54,256 posts)Used them over the camp/cooking fire.
Made great jelly 'pies'.
We used to call them "pie irons". Butter two slices of bread on the outside, fill with jam and toast over the fire.
They're great. The ones I remember were square, but same idea.
