What's for Dinner, Sun., Nov. 16, 2014

The RG just called and gave me my choice of him making something at home tonight or the restaurant with the view of the NY skyline. Either would have been fine with me, but I could tell he wanted the latter, so that's what we're doing.

It will be fun, and I'm looking forward to it.

It reminds me of the old one-line joke:

I just made my favorite thing for dinner: a reservation!

Have a great time!

Potato galette (my mandoline came apart while slicing the potatoes, cutting two fingers. Finished with a knife, which was awkward because of BandAids.) Yellow beans.

I bought one, but I'm afraid to use it. Just putting it together and taking it apart scares me.

Hope you are ok.

Never had a problem with it before, but it'll be a while before I try to use it again. It's just that the bandaged middle finger makes it awkward to do things.

There are a number of them there. I have Prime, so I think I'll order one for the RG for Christmas.

So sorry you injured yourself, GreatAunt.

I was going to oven roast it, but I'm not lighting that stove today.

Rice on the side. DH has a touch of Montezuma's revenge and I think rice is what he needs.

And some grilled eggplant.

Yum!

Enjoy your night out Cher.

From Trader Joe's. I'll make a soy-red chili-honey dipping sauce for it. That's about it.

ps: yesterday's deep dish pizza came out awesome! I even had a piece for breakfast this morning.

I love them. It's one of the things I really miss from TJ's.

Glad your pizza came out great.

Right out of the freezer, I do a quick brown in olive oil on both sides. Then, it's spatter time.

I add 1-2 Tbs of water, and cover them quickly. (1) to keep the steam in, and (2) because of the oil/water spatter. Don't try this naked.

I love them with hoisin sauce.

Have you tried the chicken-cilantro dumplings? I usually choose them because the salt content is fairly reasonable.

Your dipping sauce sounds deee-lish!

since it was so long since I made one in the ol' cast iron beast.

And, cutting it in the pan didn't really crew up the seasoning of the pan. Though, I did see some cut marks. But not deep enough for the cast iron to show. But just in case, I gave 'er a good oiling and put 'er in a 350F oven for an hour.

It probably didn't need it, but what the heck.

I made some today with milk and butter, then added chopped fresh spinach and frozen corn. It was ok with Jiffy corn bread but pretty bland. I may try pureeing the rest of it, add some spices and make a souffle.

That takes me waaaay back. What I liked about Jiffy was the fact every dry ingredient you needed was in the mix. (Hence the name Jiffy, eh? How clever.)

Whether it was corn bread, pizza dough, or brownies, just add a couple of liquids (oil, water, eggs, whatever), and bake away.

Geez, I'm all misty now...

It was so pretty and the restaurant was quiet, for a change. The RG had cod and I had tossed arugula and butterleaf lettuce salad with cranberries and caramelized walnuts. Also it had goat cheese in it.

Then I had shrimp tempura. It was good, but there were only five shrimp.

For dessert we had this incredible apple-cream tart with all these different little concoctions of chutney-type things around it.

Lovely evening.
