Tonight 2-5-2015 at the homeless shelter.

It's Chili con o sin carne. With or without meat. I'm not making that, but I am finally making my beef barley soup. I've decided I'll let it simmer the rest of the afternoon and add the barley when I get it to the shelter. It's very rich. I'd bought some boneless chuck on sale a while back and froze it for this purpose. Onions, carrots, zucchini, potato and peas are also going in. Two boxes of beef broth. I'll probably be adding water later on.

Last night the mayor of our fair city came to the shelter and spent well over an hour talking to guests, staff, and volunteers. He came into office a year ago and seems to be a pretty good guy.

1. My favorite trick for chili con frijoles pero sin carne

is to throw in a hefty amount of bulgur wheat. That gives it a "bite" that is almost like burger and has fooled more than one person into thinking I'd slipped some meat in there.

I suggest this in case you make it at some point.

I can't remember a mayor in my whole life doing anything more than a photo op in the serving line at a mission or shelter. Yours does seem to be a decent one.

basic. But thanks for the suggestion.

I was quite impressed with the amount of time he spent, and he really listened to people. This despite the fact that he got there a good hour or more later than originally planned and has a cold. I thought for sure it would be a photo op, but there was no media presence, and no entourage of any kind. Just the mayor. He does seem to be a good guy.

3. I've been toying with the idea of moving up there

Decent newspaper, decent politicians, and all that. It's just the chichi art people and all the crystal people who discouraged me when I moved out here in 1990 and I doubt that's changed, that and the fact that St. Victim's was the only game in town for nurses.

Now the only thing holding me back is the thought of packing up all this CRAP.

4. I used to work for Christus St Vincent.

It's poor reputation, at least these days, is largely undeserved. Although it is more and more the only game in town as the Christus organization buys up more and more practices.

I have had one and exactly one celebrity sighting in the six and a half years I've been here, although most people seem to cross paths with various well-known personages much more often.

This city also has a totally undeserved reputation for being so expensive no one can afford to live here. That's because, so far as I can tell, they ONLY compare housing prices to Santa Fe. Clearly no one has ever lived in a truly expensive city like San Francisco or NYC.

PM me if you want to make a visit up here. We could connect.

5. I've been watching the housing prices finally slide back into something approaching reality

Food and gas are more expensive up there but that's not a big deal to me these days.

As for comparing housing prices, I moved out here from Boston. 'Nuff said.

6. The housing prices here are distorted by the multi-million dollar

homes that the very rich own. It is possible to own a home for a very reasonable amount, depending somewhat on your definition of reasonable. We did not have the kind of bubble here that occurred in so many other places, and that's good.
