This old (1/2) Italian swears it is not needed.

Any large canned whole tomatoes, some chopped onion, a little parsley, whole small can tomato paste. Mix well to break up paste and the tomato chunks. Stir as sauce simmers.

Simmer for a while---at least an hour. In the meantime, make the meatballs. I cook mine in the oven. Just as good, less fat, no mess. Simple recipe will do.

Brown any other meats you might want to use. Add to sauce.
Simmer a little longer. Add water as needed. I don't like a thick sauce so I always end up adding at least a cup of water, maybe more.
Done!

Enjoy dinner and freeze the leftover sauce for another time.

My Italian grandmother and my mother would both scream at the thought of sugar in the sauce.
