(1,451 posts)No idea why but we usually had it for Easter growing up. Hubby and I grill a leg of lamb these days. No religious reason. We just love lamb and Easter is a good excuse to splurge We'll have roasted potatoes and asparagus with the lamb. Not big on dessert...just good wine

(1,706 posts)is that pigs were slaughtered in the fall, and the hams cured over the winter and were finally ready in spring. Whatever the reason, I agree, ham is yummy!

(1,706 posts)for our Easter dinner for two. He won and I have a two pound shoulder roast. I'm thinking I'll brown it, then cook it covered with a little wine and some herbs. Then, for Easter Monday, a couple individual shepherd's pies to heat up when we get home from work (me a couple hours before him).

(16,334 posts)our plans are up in the air due to some scheduling conflicts. The only family we would see are planning an early brunch which we won't be able to make. But we will drop in at some point so I was thinking of just taking something for dessert.
I miss the whole Easter egg hunt and salty ham thing but I hope to have grand kids one day and start the tradition myself.

(9,834 posts)family tree, so there will just be 4 of us. I have scaled back considerably. We will probably have roasted sweet potatoes, ham, steamed broccoli, roasted (homegrown) asparagus, a fresh fruit plate with brownies (homemade, frozen a couple weeks ago.)

(9,834 posts)many that have been planted by birds over the years. It takes about 3 years to get a pencil-sized stalk. I love the big, thick, chunky spears that we find in the wild, along the fence rows. Even though Mom has been gone 15 years and Dad for 8 years, it's like a gift they left behind for us to find every spring. We are going to dig some of the extremely large crowns this fall and break them into smaller ones. Mother Earth News said we might wind up with more than we know what to do with. I don't think so! Pickled asparagus is fabulous!

(50,130 posts)...grapefruit zest, orange zest, and lemon zest stirred in when it's nearly done, and add butter and parm or grana padana when finished. We used to always have this with peel and eat shrimp and a celeriac remoulade (salad made with celery root and a New Orleans style remoulade dressing) for NewYears. Seemed to go together. I have NO southern roots to guide me, though. Just a lot of cookbooks.

thanks for the tip on the polenta - gonna try that for sure.
I lived in the french quarter for three years and had the most amazing food ever. But...it must take more that a mere recipe because almost impossible to replicate

(2,016 posts)Only because I have a corned brisket in the fridge. Low and slow in the oven, with carrots, onion, potatoes. Cabbage will be done on the stove-top.
Happy Sunday!

(60,010 posts)Got a great recipe from Alton Brown's website, made the brine, soaked the brisket ( huge one, from a rancher up the road) for 10 days,
let it simmer in the crockpot over night and it tastes just like deli corned beef.!!!!
Color me hugely surprised but pleased.
Making a potato salad now and since Mr. Dixie wants cabbage, will cook him up some in the beef broth.
Southern apple dumplings for dessert.
