An old-fashioned dessert that was especially popular in the 1930s and is sometimes known as Depression Cake. Try it with a cream cheese frosting.

(5,210 posts)I bought in the mid 60s called America Cooks. It's a compilation of recipes from Junior Women's Leagues around the country. Wonderful book, filled with unique recipes and some standards as well.
This one was called "Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake," and it's frankly delicious. I think if I were to do it again I'd go ahead and use butter instead of that nasty ole shortening. It tastes a lot like the spice cake you used to be able to buy from A&P grocery stores. Delicious, as I said.
