What's for Dinner, Thurs., Feb. 28, 2019

We had a very late lunch or maybe you could call it an early dinner at a Portuguese restaurant. This is a seafood restaurant and we have never tried it before, but it is owned and operated by a Portuguese firm that also owns supermarkets. The RG likes their supermarkets.

I had Portuguese barbecue grilled chicken, which is not made with spicy tomato sauce and brown sugar, but served with garlic/hot pepper/olive oil. The RG had clams. Both entrees were served with rice and thinly sliced potatoes that are like homemade potato chips. The chips they served here, though, do not compare to the same type at the other Portuguese restaurants we go to.

For dessert we had segadurro. Spelling? Forgot. It's also called "sawdust" dessert because it has crumbs in it on top of some creamy type concoction. It was very good but then the waiter came over with a bottle of Chambord and said he wanted to make it a little extra special for us. He poured the Chambord, which is a liqueur made with red and black raspberries, on top.

No salad, so later tonight I might make one.

Meatloaf, Mashed potatoes and gravy. I made buttered carrots as a side. I also decided to make Hotel Peabody Vanilla Muffins for a dessert.
There are dozens of that recipe on line. My version is handwritten by my Grandma, in the 60s.
Hot decafe tea & a muffin for movie time tonight.

I am making orange chicken, jasmine rice, and broccoli. Green onions mixed in with the rice.

We have cupcakes for dessert that a friend brought me.

It is a specialty from Macau. The crumbs are from Maria biscuits (similar to graham crackers in flavor but crispier).

In the case of the chicken, the spice is called piri-piri, and it comes originally from Mozambique.

We were very busy this afternoon so we popped a frozen pizza in the oven.

FLFC is a fan of pizza, but unfortunately he leaves pizza bones in odd places and then growls at you when you get close to them.

We did some shopping today, but given that I've caught a cold, I didn't feel much like cooking.

So... hot & sour soup (have to have that when you have a cold), crab rangoon, kung pao chicken and house special lo mien. (The kung pao was a bit disappointing. I'm all for crunchy veg in my Chinese food, but some of this veg needed a few more minutes.)

There's definitely enough left for lunches tomorrow.

It felt good to get some groceries. We didn't have much left. I can tell you for certain that I'm making an omelet for brekkie tomorrow.

The end of every month can get very tight. (It's been even worse lately... seems like when we figure out how to pay for one crisis, another one comes along.)

We still have to get some proteins, but we're looking for bargains. I'm actually proud of how I find the sales and make menus and freeze leftovers for other meals.

A bit on the spicy side because the chili peppers were hotter than the last time I bought them.
