Related: About this forumA couple of weeks ago I got the dreadful Beyond sausages...
https://www.democraticunderground.com/115781453Last night I found the meat patties on sale. Two 1/4 lb patties in a package for $5.74 (less $1.76).
My first question, naturally, is why would I spend over 11 bucks a pound for fake 70% ground chuck? OK, I got them on sale for 8 bucks a pound, but we're still pushing prime sirloin prices.
Aside from the price, which should drop as production ramps up, they tasted far better than the atrocious, gag-inducing sausages. Quite tasty, actually, although still a slight bit gritty and nowhere near what $12 beef tastes like. They were sitting next to enormous packages of cheaper vegan Bubba Burgers, which aren't terrible, either. Nor are MorningStar, or other fake meats.
Aside from price and quality, I suppose the larger question is that when there are so many extremely good and satisfying meatless dishes out there already, what is the point of fake meat? Expensive fake meat at that.

You aren't seriously advocating that cows are better off being butchered are you?

(55,013 posts)too much in the DNA. literally.
even if it did, cattle are the number one only way we are going to be able to fix unhealthy soils over immense land areas. we need them more than most can fathom.
they are the best tools for healing land (even land they have "ruined" and they make delicious, high quality, complete protein out of sun, rain, and plant matter we can not digest.

But, as I said, I make plenty of veggie meals as it is, and don't have to disguise them. Tonight I'm thinking of eggplant Parmesan with some spinach in there.
Not vegan, but I never said I was a vegetarian and certainly not a vegan. (I might even throw some bacon on top...)

(3,282 posts)The beef industry has an enormous carbon footprint, and giant agribusiness factory slaughterhouses are horrible for the animals, the workers, and consumers. But there are a lot of people who think that the dinner meal must be a giant slab of grilled protein along with a pile of starch and probably some vegetables maybe.
On our cooking channel we do a bunch of interesting vegetarian dishes, including a bunch of great salads and slaws, and we'll be doing a vegetarian saag paneer (replacing the paneer with feta) in an upcoming video sometime in the next few months. Hubby also makes mapu tofu, which frequently has pork, but it is not required. The idea of meat "substitutes" reinforces the idea that we have to be eating meat all the time.
Don't get me wrong, I am nowhere near a vegetarian (though I frequently feel that I should be for environmental and corporate ethics reasons), but it is easy to have very satisfying meals that are not only meatless, but do not have a "meat substitute" either. Lots of ways to get protein and such if you're careful about what you're eating and maintain some balanced meals.
And don't get me started on those far right bitcoin carnivore cultists. There's this fringe group that has decided that the best diet for humans is 100% meat all the time, no carbs, no fibre. Just meat, fat, organ meat. Please note: This is -not- a healthy diet, and they're all going to be in agony in 15-20 years from diverticulitis.

(43,049 posts)if one is trying to wean the unadventurous off of beef, why not just make some luxurious non-meat dishes? Seems the unadventurous would run faster from fake meat than from an asparagus souffle with truffles and Bearnaise sauce. (Got yer heart attack covered, carnivores)
Salads and slaws definitely work for me, except some of them are a little too much work.

(3,282 posts)I can't recommend it enough for making very fine julienne veggies for slaw, especially super fibrous stuff like beets. You can also use a box grater, but it's not quite as refined a texture.

(2,674 posts)Eat pure food, just eat less for pete's sake! Who needs an 8 Oz (1/2 a pound od meat!)hamburger patty loaded with 2 slices of cheese?
3 or 4 ounces of protein in a meal twice a day is all the average person needs. Eat more pasta, rice and fresh veggies. Have a bowl of maltomeal or oatmeal or whole grain cereal for breakfast instead of bacon and eggs. or a bowl of plain yogurt with fruit, (plenty of protein in yogurt) but don't get the tricked out kind, try plain whole milk yogurt.
And while I am preachy, kick the sugary drinks and processed snacks habit.

(6,022 posts)These are all valid reasons for fake meat. I love real beef, but I dont like what beef production is doing to the planet and growth of beef production cant continue like this.
Im not so sure about the taste of Beyond meats - I tried the Beyond Taco at Del Taco and it was OK, but i thought the meat taste overpowered the taco. However, the Impossible Burger is downright delicious. If someone hadnt told me, Id think it was a real burger. Unfortunately, theres a shortage of them right now.
Yeah, its relatively expensive right now and the recipes are still being tweaked. We are in the beginning stages. You can compare this market to the electric car market. Prices are high right now, but costs will drop as production scales and more competitors enter the market.
And like electric cars, its a done deal - just a matter of time before it eventually overtakes the market. There will always be some level of demand for a good steak, but real meat production is unsustainable at current levels, given population growth, methane byproducts and destruction of forest lands for grazing.

(4,743 posts)I've tried both Beyond and Impossible; Beyond I can take or leave but Impossible, at least in grilled-patty form, is pretty damn solid. Solid enough that I'd gladly sub it out for 85% of the burgers that I eat, and I'm a certified meat lover. Once they hit stores this year I'll probably always have a pack on hand.

(15,090 posts)When I go vegetarian, its not imitation meat, its tofu, beans, lentils, and other tasty vegetable protein sources. When I eat meat, its real meat, which I try to obtain from local sources.

(32,086 posts)They make a couple of different refrigerated varieties. The Italian-style are okay. Haven't tried the sweet apple variety. I love their frozen breakfast sausages. patties and links. They used to make sausage crumbles, but sadly, they discontinued those. Those were great on pizza or in other Italian dishes.

(25,862 posts)There's a dishonesty in being vegetarian or whatever and then going for a fake version of what you say is so awful.
Personally, I'm a happy eater of real meat, but were I do give it up, I'd skip the fake stuff.

(4,516 posts)makes me gag. I have always had an aversion to meat.
When I did eat meat it was always what kind of meat to fix then what to go with it. People are used to thinking like that. If they go vegetarian they still are thinking of meat first and what to have with it. So we substitute veggies meat for real meat.
I think trying to find fault with veggie meat or those that eat it rediculous.
