1. Birthday dinner

Today is the Landlady(!)'s birthday so I'm making one of her favorites.

Southern-fried spicy catfish, fresh corn-on-the-cob and a big mixed green salad.

We have a terrific bottle of wine from a Michigan vineyard called Lazy Ballerina. It's a full-bodied red and it's kind of funny since the birthday lady teaches ballet. By the way, from my experience there is no such thing as a lazy ballerina!

Carrot cake with candles for dessert.

Landlady(!) has good taste. Happy Birthday to her!

We're having a doctor-ed up frozen pizza. Cheese pizza, to which I added ham, onion, broccoli, garlic and extra cheese.

Dad & Sis got turkey meatloaf w/ mashed potatoes and mushroom/brown gravy. Steamed broccoli and carrots.

Dessert is lemon cake w/ white frosting--for all of us.

You don't have to go through the whole process but you have something decent when you're ready to eat.

The corn was still in the husks! They must have been trucked up from the South. I didn't see the manager of the supermarket or I would have asked.

but as I haven't been out on the road much, to observe, my 'ignorance' remains.

Neighbor/landlord has had surrounding fields, southern MD, planted with corn or soy or wheat in past years, but not sure what's happening now, new farmer supposed to be doing the work.

The village across the Delaware River is the Hamlet of Callicoon. It's a Catskills community and Bethel, NY (where the Woodstock Festival was held) is about 15 minutes away.

It's mostly a very rural area with lots of farms and undeveloped woodlands. But it's still the end of Winter even though we've had some nice days. There's no way that corn is local. Now I'm determined to find out. I'll let you know, elleng!

And some cornbread to go with it.

The soup didn’t start out Mexican, really, but it got there, anyway. That’s what happens when you live in South Texas long enough.

Chicken thighs and onions braised in vinegar.
Hasselback potatoes.
Coffee ice cream for dessert.

the Retrograde interpretation of an Alsatian dish made with saurkraut, leftover chicken, carrots, potatoes, and maybe a sausage if I can find one in the freezer. With sour cherry pie, made from my very own cherries that I froze last summer.
