New adoption program focused on finding perfect pet-human match

New adoption program at Animal Care and Control NYC shelters focused on finding perfect pet-human matches
Too many adoptions are left up to chance or misperceptions about how animals will behave. New program begins Saturday.

The agency is hoping to find homes for the thousands of homeless cats and dogs that come through its doors every year — but the goal is quality, not quantity.

“We would love to see adoptions increase but we really want to make good matches,” said Ellen Curtis, a senior Animal Care and Control manager, who oversees the adoptions program.

Under the new program, potential adopters can now bypass the hectic intake desk - where people drop off unwanted animals and heartbroken owners search for lost pets - and head to a quieter room where they meet with experts and have some face time with a new furry friend.

“People may come in thinking they want a certain animal,” said Curtis. “But after we talk to them, they may have a different idea.”

Animal Care and Control of NYC Petacular Adoption Celebration, Manhattan Care Center, 326 E. 110th St., June 29, noon to 3 p.m. For information and shelter locations go to nycacc.org.

The better the match, the more likely the pet finds a forever home. Also, better matches and happier shelter pets are awesome P.R.. The best pet adoption places all treat is like a science and a work of art.

I might send this to the rescue group that I got my Sammy from, and see if they would like to look into how this is being done.

I have never had a dog, and have always thought that I will have one someday when my life is not so hectic and I am not gone for most of the day (and all of the day in winter). But I know that the dogs that I "like" are not suitable to me. I just don't know what IS suitable to me. It would be great to have a professional help make a perfect fit.

great idea!

You are wise to realize that you have to find a dog that suits you - things like activity level, size of your home, the amount of time you can spend with the dog, amount of grooming required, etc are extremely important for both of you to be happy. A program like this could certainly help you find the right one.

I've had dogs all my life, it's a wonderful relationship that I hope you get to experience some day

that was found where I worked once. It was a saluki. I can say that I did not have the energy, or the yard, for a dog like that.

At least I found a good home for it, but I loved salukis and learned fast that it would never be a good fit for me. I probably need a lazy dog.....like my cat.
